Safety Handling and Storage of Gas Cylinders

If you have or use gas cylinders, you must handle and store them properly. This is very important since hazards like falls, fire, leakage, and explosion are possible to happen if you do not exert care and caution in using these devices. Presence of mind, common sense, and extreme caution are needed when handling gas cylinders such as nitrous oxide cartridges and carbon dioxide cartridges.

Storage

Gas cylinders should be kept inside a specialized room that is fenced and locked. It should be out of children’s reach. Unauthorized persons should not be able to enter the room. There should be a ready firefighting device suitable for fires caused by flammable gases. The appropriate fire extinguisher is powder, as this is designed for flammable gases. But it is not enough that you have a fire extinguisher, you must know how to use so that in case there is a fire caused by the gas cylinder, you can readily curb it before it becomes big and out of control. If the fire is already big, do not attempt to fight it anymore and just leave the premises as fast as you can. Gas cylinders should also be stored far from anything that is flammable and combustible. Don’t expose them to high temperature or more than 52 degrees Celsius. Do not store cylinders for more than a year. Be sure to calculate your consumption exactly. Leave a little pressure inside before disposal so there will not be moisture inside the canister.

Organization

Aside from secured storage, these devices should also be organized properly. Make sure that you put appropriate labels on the cylinders that indicate the content and pressure. This is to ensure that you don’t make the mistake of getting the wrong device. This is very important because using the wrong gas can result in disastrous consequences. Not to mention, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide cartridges look similar so it is possible for you to make a mistake in getting a device. Apart from safety reasons, proper organization will also save you a great deal of time. Instead of spending hours figuring out where is the canister that you need, you can easily spot it if the canisters are located in designated places.

Handling

Only authorized and trained workers should be allowed to enter the storage room and handle the canisters. Never handle these cylinders with electromagnets, slings, or ropes. Always check to see if the cylinders are properly sealed. Don’t use any that doesn’t have a clear mark. If unsure, discard the canister instead of risk getting an injury. When opening the cylinders, do it slowly to a wide-open position. Use sturdy hand trucks for moving the gas cylinders from one place to another.

Safety should always be your top priority when using or handling gas cylinders. Remember, these canisters can cause fires and explosions and lead to injuries or death when not handled or stored properly. See to it that they are stored securely, handled carefully, and organized properly so that you won’t experience any problem using these cartridges.
