Schadenfreude
When someone makes a particularry bizzare fall, you usually laugh. But when you think of it, it’s absolutely not funny. So why do we laugh.
Did you ever slipped on the wet floor in the mall while all your friends are looking? They probably all laughed, (if it wasn’t a very dangerous or painfull fall). And perhaps you did too. But did you find it funny?
Pain one of the five things our skin can feel (the others being heat, cold, pressure and light touches). It is a very useful ’skill’, as it warns us if our body is (getting) damaged. However, experiencing it isn’t very pleasant, especially not with bad injuries.
However there are some exceptions, most people don’t like experiencing pain. But they do (although unknowingly) when somebody else sustains small injuries. Why? Probably because they are not the subject, and are glad that they are not that person. When laughing at self-injuries, it is usually because they understand that it is their own stupid (and amusing) fault, like ignoring a wet-floor signs.
People that like (inflicting) pain in extreme doses are called sadists.
So remember, the next time you see something falling from the stairs, remember:
That could have been YOU.
