Should Guys Carry an Umbrella?
The issue is whether it is acceptable for a guy to carry an umbrella.
In every city, there are eccentric people. For instance, Santa Cruz California has Pinky Valentino who wears clown makeup and carries a tin-foiled umbrella.
In Miami, the majority of younger guys would rather get drenched than risk the embarrassment and humiliation of being called a “Homo” in front of their friends. They may carry a small pocket umbrella with them in their pockets just to please their mothers who warned them that if they got wet they would catch the flu, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will use it. For example, in Seattle, most people refuse to carry an umbrella because it is not considered cool.
In Arizona, it hardly rains so people don’t normally carry an umbrella. Now, I just asked my friend who lives in Phoenix whether he thinks it is gay for a man to carry an umbrella and he said yes. If it did rain here, the only way that I would use an umbrella would be to get real close to my girlfriend he said. Moving on to Korea, I did some research and found that it is acceptable for a guy to carry an umbrella.
In Miami, it is not masculine for a guy to carry a tote bag nor purse. While wearing a raincoat is not cool for some, for others is just fine. Everyone is unique in their own special way.

I don’t think that carrying an umbrella would make a guy gay but I do agree that everyone is unique in their own little ways
Great article! ^_^

My husband is ‘more uniqie’ than most, he always has an umberella with a map of the London underground printed on it. He also has a selection of man bags, but he is certainly not gay. Who cares what other people think.

I think it a kind of culture thing! The big football managers use umbrellas! I never carry one myself because I never have any free hands.

Some people are so sad.I carry an umbrella all the time because i dont want to get wet.Simple! I couldnt care less what people think..I wore a pink shirt to work one time and people kept making stupid remarks like you look gay or you are like a women..Such crap!I continue to wear it and now see others expressing themselves more openly.About the gay comments! I think gays dress fab and are not afraid to wear or express themselves in whatever way they see fit.Good on them! We can learn alot about confidence from the gay community…

I love two things only
As far as possible
Wet yourself in the rain
Show whatever remains….
And when inside doors
Nude remain
Enjoy he natural birthday suit
Won’t you like to?
And will you let everyone know
When girls carry bananas
They give away their show
They are lesbians
This they want you all to know

Carrying an umbrella is only a wise choice if it is raining. I don’t think you should be labeled gay because you elected to be smart rather than stupid.

Not at all. In our country where it’s raining half of the year, it’s quite normal to see a guy with an umbrella, whether it be plain-colored, floral or even Hello Kitty! If it does the job of protecting him from the rain, who cares about the masculinity issue?
Nice article.

I was astonished to find this article. Where could the idea possibly have come from that carrying an umbrella could be a sign that anyone is gay, or straight, or goes to church, or donates all his or her money to charity, or is homeless, or wealthy, or anything else?? Surely this article is a wake-up call to all decent people everywhere, to stop labelling other people. Next time you hear someone say \”that person is _____________ (good, bad, evil, a genius, gay, straight, rich, poor, whatever) because………\” stop them right there and tell them to their face that they are simply being foolish. Most of these claims about people are not even true in the communities where they are supposedly accepted cultural norms. Lots of men use a shoulder-bag that looks like a carry-on luggage bag, for example, instead of a briefcase simply because they carry important papers or other items and cannot risk leaving a briefcase in a public place. Myself, I carry a shoulder-bag of this kind everywhere simply because I do not drive, so I do not get to leave my \”stuff\” in a car like most people do. There are many days in the year when I need to wear a sweater under my jacket in the colder part of the day, but during the hotter part of the day I need to be able to carry the sweater with me so that I will have it for when the temperature drops, because I am not going to be going to a heated car, so that is just one of many things that I need my shoulder-bag for. There is nothing gay or straight about it; it is just being practical. I carry an umbrella with me all the time for another very practical reason; I have been attacked by dogs three times already in my life, so I decided that I need a socially acceptable weapon to protect myself. Not everyone will agree with that solution, perhaps, but no one benefits from labelling me because of it. It is simply my solution to a problem in my life, no one else\’s. It does no harm at all to anyone, so only a very foolish person would pay any attention to it. Finally, let me just say that the idea that anyone should let themselves get soaked to the skin because it is not considered \”cool\” to carry an umbrella is a case study in following the herd. Why would any self-respecting woman want a man who cannot think for himself on such a simple matter?

We can’t keep going through life worrying about what others think about us. We will never be happy.
If you want to get wet stand in the rain. If not, then use an umbrella. It’s a choice. Do not let someone make it for you.

Who cares about getting a few rain drops on you. I guess its different for business men who wear suits and wouldn’t want to get their clothes wet for an important meeting, right? But if you see a guy with a freakin hello kitty umbrella. Yes, thats freakin gay.

Not in my country, Indonesia. But it can be ‘gayish’ if the color’s pink or other girly color. I personally prefer raincoat though.

I agree with Michael. Why they have this type of thinking. We don’t have to bother with them, just carry your umbrella with you when you think there is a need, regardless of men or women. Let them laugh, and when they are tired, will keep their mouth shut… hahaha.

making an issue of someone being gay is the point: It is possible to create an unexpected result when we loose these paronoid concerns on society. For example, if it is allowed without challenge to be o.k. to make an issue of people being gay, then it is possible that a person of ill-will might create a gossip mill labeling YOU as gay to multiple people (even though they know very well you’re not) and make you lose the person you intended to love. For example, a talented gay person whom your business needs may quietly decide not to work for you(think of the gay man who single handedly broke the German code during world war two allowing the Allies to win). For example, someone secretly gay may remember the people who make issue of them and quietly refuse to assist them in a time of great need and urgency. By allowing paronoia to go unchallenged in society, we will eventually get unexpected results.

Congratulations on making it to the Hot Content AGAIN!
I don’t think it’s gay if a man carries an umbrella. I’d rather see a gorgeous guy dry than see the same guy wet so if it means they have to use an umbrella, there is no issue in that. Although, you are right, it differs from place to place and human to human which makes us who we are really!

I’ve never even heard of this as an issue. It’s routine to see men carrying business or golfing style unbrellas around here (we get lots of rain). If I saw I bloke carrying a pink unbrella or something overtly feminine then maybe but carrying a normal umbrella would not make me thing anything at all.
I am very curious as to how on earth this made it into Hot Content?!

I think the title question is just plan stupid. If it rains, I carry an Umbrella, period. It is just a matter of practicality. And if anyone thinks that somehow that has anything to do with sexual orientation, then they are just plan idiots. That is not an opinion, but just a fact.

An umbrella is used for protection against rain. I just can’t see how people could regard men carrying them as gay

Nah I don’t think that carring an umbrella would mean a guy us gay. If he doesn’t want to get wet that is his own choice and people shouldn’t judge men for that. Great article.

i don’t think it would be gay at all. The purpose of using an umbrella is to keep dry right?!?! so I don’t think it is gay. Now, if it isn’t raining and you use the umbrella to keep the sun off of you then, yes that is the gay use of an umbrella. LOL

I do not think that a man is a homosexual if he carries an umbrella. Do I think that it looks kind of funny? Yes. But that doesn’t mean he is a homosexual. You chose the wrong title for this article. I am very surprised that this wasn’t denied.

I’ve never heard of men who carry umbrellas referred to as “homos.” Just as many men carry umbrellas when it rains as women. Since when did umbrellas become a “fashion statement” or whatever anyway? They are simply a device to keep from getting wet.

Dear Triond commenters,
I have read all of your comments regarding my article. For those who again are offended, it seems that you don’t have a very good command of the English language and again have misunderstood me. I have NEVER said that guys who carry umbrellas are gay. In Miami, where the number of guys are good-looking and masculine, many of them consider it sissy to carry an umbrella. They would much rather get wet than carry one. But excuse me, I forgot we are not in the United States here. We are in the United Kingdom. I am an opinionated Journalist and writer and I am sorry for those who don’t like to hear the truth. If you don’t like my work, then please don’t visit my page. Thank you
