Have you ever thought about the amount of money that you could save by doing some things yourself? Having diverse skills, such as, cooking, sewing, home repair, auto maintenance, and arts and crafts can save you money and impress your friends all at the same time.
How many times have you paid someone to do something and thought, ‘I could have done that?’ Not knowing whether the person just made it look easy, or , it was an easy task; all you know is that you paid them 20 bucks for 5 minutes of work. A person could become a millionaire with that kind of return. With our economy the way it is, I don’t think that it’s a bad idea to learn new skills, or enhance those that we already have. This is a list of skills that definitely will save you money, and most importantly, intrigue your friends:
Cooking – We all can throw something in the microwave or place a frozen pizza on a baking sheet, but, learning to cook entire meals will save a lot of money. Not only is cooking cheaper than eating out, it’s healthier, because you can control what goes into your food, as well as, the portions.
The best way to learn good cooking skills, is to just get in the kitchen and cook. Think of your favorite restaurant dishes and find recipes for them. I am an avid Food Network junkie. I, honestly, believe that anyone can become a gourmet chef consistently watching cooking shows. Or, at least, good enough to have your friends envious.
Sewing – Learning the skill of sewing can save so much money. Have you looked at the alterations chart at the cleaners? Putting on your own buttons, changing a zipper, creating a cuff or hem can save a lot of money in the long run. And you don’t have to wait in line or pay $5 and $10.
Another great benefit to learning to sew is that you can alter garments to make them uniquely you. Your friends will want to know where you got that t-shirt or dress. They will never find one, because you added a little lace, sequins, or fancy trim that took the outfit to a whole different level. Just by changing the buttons on a jacket can create a whole new look. Having sewing skills also comes in handy around the house, because you can create your own one of a kind pillows, drapes, and wall hangings.
You can learn how to sew by hand or buy a sewing machine. Take a quick course at the local technology center, vocational school or ask a friend who has sewing skills to give you a few tips.
