Strauss-kahn Was Sent to Rikers Island Prison in New York

Strauss-Kahn, a man accustomed to the luxury suites in hotels and air travel in first class, will relocate to the Rikers Island jail in New York.

Strauss-Kahn will be transferred from a detention center adjacent to Manhattan Criminal Court to Rikers Island, a department spokesman said prison in New York.

On Monday, a judge denied bail to Strauss-Kahn on charges of attempted rape of a maid of the hotel where he was staying. The next trial hearing is Friday.

Strauss-Kahn could be isolated by continuous monitoring, largely for their own protection to inmates who may seek fame attacking someone as famous as him, according to people familiar with the processes of jail and they would not be quoted.

Rikers, a center of 10 prisons on an island of 168 acres near LaGuardia Airport, is known for being the place they are sending suspects standing trial or who are serving short sentences. Rikers, dating from the 1930, houses about 11,000 inmates and is a dangerous place.

“It is crowded and the food is terrible. And one of the dangerous things is to take advantage of the famous,” said Gerald Lefcourt, a prominent defense lawyer.

The newcomers are subjected to a thorough study of its history and possible criminal associations. The guards look for tattoos or any sign that could reveal membership in a criminal gang.

Officials assigned a score to determine the inmate’s security risk. Low-risk inmates are housed in dormitories that house tens full of people. It is assumed that Strauss-Kahn may wear their own clothes, have books and read the newspaper. Common cells have a television.
