The American Flag: History in the Making

Have you ever felt both proud and grateful to be American? Have you ever considered that when compared to third-world locations, we’re so fortunate to live in such a prosperous and thriving country? The next time you see the American flag, straighten your back, stand up tall, and most importantly, remember what it truly stands for.

The American flag, at first glance, is merely a piece of cloth that originated from three spools of red, white, and blue thread that you are forced to salute to. Although we may take this very vital piece of American history for granted, its historical importance cannot compare to the significance it holds in the hearts of Americans not only residing in this country, but in the entire world.

The three distinct colors of the American flag, red, white, and blue, differ in what they represent. When I see the red and white stripes, my mind visualizes the blood that our founding fathers shed in order to form America and the inimitability of America that resulted from their sacrifices. The white stars being surrounded by the vibrant blue attract the most attention in my mind. When I look at them, I can envisage the citizens of America being represented as stars, and our military as the blue rectangle. As the blue encompasses the pure stars, our military protects us, the citizens of America, from danger. Each color may illustrate a certain aspect of America when separated, but the way that they have been used together depicts the diversity of all Americans. The colors of the flag paint the perfect picture that we call America.

Each time I sacrifice a little bit of my day to look at the American flag, I see all of the good aspects of our marvelous country: freedom, protection, diversity, and taintlessness. One part of the American flag that is rarely mentioned is the pole. The pole uplifts the flag for the world to gaze at. We, as Americans, must be the symbolic pole for the flag of our nation. We must raise our flag high into the air and show all people that what we affirm about America holds its truth and will forevermore be the symbol of righteousness in this world. I am put into a state of awe when I ponder the thought that such a simple rectangular cloth can hatch such an immeasurable impact on a country like ours.
