The Cities of Arras: Calais and Boulonge-Sur-Mer
This will tell you about the cities of Calais,Arras and Boulonge-sur-mer which are the three most important sities in Pas-de-Calais.
Arras
Arras is the capital of Pas de Calais. It was founded on a hill by a Celtic tribe it was named Nemetacum. It was later renamed Atrebatum when the Romans took over it.
During The Battle of Arras in The First World War the British soldiers used a series of medieval tunnels to keep control of the city.
The city had to be rebuilt after the war.
During World War Two the British focused on a counter attack against the Germans in the city.
Calais
Though Calais is the largest city in Pas de Calais it is not the capital. The estimated population of Calais is around 125000. Calais is the closest town next to England only 33km (21 miles) away from Dover. But sadly Calais does not have many tourists. During WWII most of the buildings in Calais were destroyed due to bombs so not many of the buildings are older than or as old as the Second World War.
Boulogne-sur-Mer
When Boulogne was captured by the Romans it was called Bononia.
During the middle ages the area of this place was fought over control of it by the French, English and Scottish. The Peace of Boulogne ended this war and later the French bought it for 200,000 crowns
