Washington D.C. November 2nd 2004: The day is coming to an end. The campaign is flowing and the party is rocking for the republican candidate George W. Bush. Things are not the same for the Democratic candidate John Kerry. He had just lost a close election that could have gone either way had the public not been manipulated by the media. Through the equivocation and misrepresentation of the candidate’s ideas, the public found itself manipulated. The altering of the publics ideas on what the candidates stand for is unethical.

The media has a tremendous affect on people of the world today. This affect is often taken advantage of. Many companies use ads in different ways to make people buy their products. This is also used by many candidates running for election. They use symbols, phrases and they even stretch the truth to make people chose them over the other competitors.

Have you ever seen a political commercial? If you did how much information about the candidate did you learn? How many negative aspects of the other candidate?

These are all valuable questions when it comes to the ethics of advertising. Many candidates choose to campaign negatively about their adversaries rather than positively campaign about themselves. This is political manipulation,

Just about every media has its manipulations. Television is one of the largest ways people get their information about their candidates. This is also a very easy to be manipulated by. There are sounds, colors, people and many other different things that can alter or change you opinion about the candidate you choose to vote for. Many stations on television are biased. Although many deny that they are biased, we should just face the facts that there are biases everywhere. On every channel, newspaper, radio station, magazines and every other source of information, there are biases.

The election of 2004 was won by the republicans. Both sides of this election used the media to try to win the election. Different phrases were used, like the terms “red states” or “blue states”. These terms are used to identify what states vote what way. Red states started as a blog on the internet. It was there for republicans and was started by republicans. Now it is used to clarify what state voted what during an election or what states have a majority of republican or democratic voters. Therefore the opposite was created for democrats.
