The utter disregard for women in India is reflected in the problem of dowry system. It has resulted in dowry harrassment leading to suicides by brides, bride burning or murders by inlaws. The pressure of larger dowries may be attributed to the general rise in prices and current obsession with gold, silver and material possessions.Education has become expensive. The price tag attached to eligible bachelors vary accordingly to the bridegroom’s qualification and his status in society.
The dowry system has reached gargantuan proportions as many instances show ,a groom would refuse to proceed with the marriage rituals half way through unless the demand for the items was not met. Dowry is demanded in marriage because it is considered to be the traditional right of the boy’s family.
The modern system of dowry is a problem of highly conformist culture which makes it almost impossible not only for dowry seekers but also for the dowry victims to desist from such an evil practice. This system of dowry has ruined many families and created many unhappy homes.Dowry are regarded as a gift for the benefit of the husband and his relatives rather than for the benefit of the wife. This is probably the reason why dowry is demanded and the wife is harrassed for not bringing it.
The problem of dowry was sought to be tackled by confirment of improved property rights on women by the Hindu Succession Act 1956 but the evil has persisted till today.
