The Great Mosque of Demak

The mosque is a history witness how Walisanga fighting for Islam. Walisanga are the nine pious leaders who spread Islam in Java.

The great mosque of Demak is one of building which important in the Southeast Asia and in the Islamic world. This mosque is a heritance of Walisanga to the islamic society in Demak. In this mosque the Walisanga devouting, teaching and discussing about Islam.

We can say that the arsitecture of this mosque is uniq. The main walls building has square shaped with five doors and six windows. The roof is three-storey which suported by four main poles.

The size of this mosque is large enough. The width of inside is 24×24 metres square, the thickness around is 80 cm, the height of the top is 21,65 m. Almost all of the the pieces of the building made from teak, such as frame construction, upstairs beam, deck and the main pole.

The tower that used for ‘azan’ (call to prayer) which built in 1932, the height is 22 m and made from steel construction. Because the tower is attain the age more than 50 years, but it still intact and can be used. So that the government decided to put it into cultural heritage which protected by the government.

In the inside of the mosque which has 1,5 hectare large, there are LPI ( The Islam Education Institute )building, health building, library, museum and the kings’ cemetery. In these kings’ cemetery can be found the resting place of Raden Fattah ( The First Sultan Demak), Raden Patiunus ( The Second Sultan Demak), Raden Trenggono ( The Third Sultan Demak) and the number of another cementery from the kings’ environment.

 

The museum accomodated the things of cultural heritage whose the inheritance history and culture art of the Walisanga and the Demak. Those things are kept and maintained. So that there are a large number of things which stored there have to maintained well.
