The experience the immigrant faced a 100 years ago has really changed, its not the same way it was years ago and cannot be compared to the experience of today. The job opportunities in which immigrants of that era were faced with were not easy as that of today. They were faced with no job choices and less industrialization. Lots of production was done through manpower. Men did all the tedious work that is replaced today by machines. However, today’s immigrants are faced with lots of job opportunities and if Jugis were to arrived in united state in this era He would have done a better to job.
In addition, the rate in which immigrants were discriminated was higher than today. A change has occurred in the past years. In those days when immigrants arrived United States and the officers knew that they were immigrants they were sent into the stockyard. This meant that the only better and suitable place in America for immigrants was the stockyard. Even their paying for a room in the hotel they were charged higher because they were immigrants whereas in today’s era immigrant are not discriminated as they were in those days. They are given the freedom in everything they do in schools, job opportunities, bus, speech etc and they are not alienated from the citizens.
Furthermore the family had assimilated into American culture in the way they went to work. They did not have anytime for jokes, they were seen at home only at nights. Secondly by the food they ate which were all chemicals. It was different from the ones in Chicago that was prepared by them not machines. They retained their culture by not accepting to marry without all the procedure even in a strange land. Teta Elizabeth insisted that everything according to how their culture demanded should be done. Unlike my self I have retain my culture in my language, food and believes. I have assimilated into the American culture through the food, language cloth and beliefs. And in years to come I will keep assimilating.
