The Present Pulse of Aging
A short essay about the view of being caught up in society.
Why is it that at thirty we are still a viable member of society and at forty we are over and done with? Why are we more capable fresh out of college than a seasoned pro? Aging is a natural cause, and yet most are treated terribly if they are above a certain age. People that are experienced are replaced for inexperienced people that may work faster for less, but of course the quality is much lower. That of course does not matter, not for us Americans, it is all about the quantity rather than quality. Everything in this country is biased. Look at the media, if you’re not young and good looking you damn well better be old and rich. Otherwise society will pass over you, and you will be forever on the outside looking in. But why is this? Why are we the land of opportunities, but then only a select few ever gets them? This is all a part of the ever present pulse of aging.
By this I mean our focus on staying young and new to everything. We continually look for the youngest, smartest, most advantageous (meaning best looking) person for the job. Movies for one, they always look for the hottest young actors, or well established older actors. But other professions do this as well. Lawyers, Doctors, Anything that would be considered a really good job is always on the prowl. But how do we combat this?
Well, in all honesty we can not. It is a mindset, and the media has tricked us into believing the perfect person has rock hard abs and a large bank account. If you do not believe me watch your television at four in the morning. Infomercial after infomercial about staying in shape, or improving you penis size. It all factors in to the perfect image of society. We can not stop or even slow it down, in fact the only thing we can do is choose to ignore it, but it will still be there. But it still leaves the aging factor in the equation.
Effectively the aging question is a matter of perception. Most believe that the most experience and higher quality is the right way to go. Unfortunately in the greedy world we live in today the employers usually have a different stand on the subject. Most employers are less concerned about quality then if they can save some money. Avarice is a dangerous companion, but still most people could not function without it. Yet another fault of today’s society. Again watch television late at night. Infomercials galore about making millions doing nothing, and selling real estate for fifty thousand dollars a week. It all shows our true greed. We can not function a single day without the need to improve our net worth substantially. But even that conflicts with aging.
