The Twentieth Century is an Age of Greed

Yes; in most ways than not, I would agree with the above statement. It is not to say that people of earlier ages were not greedy, because they were. But the number of people consumed by this disease is many times more in this century. We have many more opportunities to feed our greed on..

The Greed for Money

This misuse of public enterprise is rooted in nothing but greed, the greed for money, for more and more profit, regardless what happens or who suffers. Look at the advertisement section of any newspaper and you will see companies advertising for “aggressive” personnel. They must sell as much as they can, even if it is like forcing their products down the consumer’s throat.

Drugs Destroy People and Society

The worsening drug situation in the world now is also a result of greed. Drug-trafficking and related offences are punishable, some even by death. Yet the drug trade is not abating. In the contrary, it is booming. Why is that so? Again we have people greedy enough to take great risks in exchanged for great returns. Their only aim is money. A drug is one way of getting money, big money. So they go in it regardless the fact that drugs destroy people and society. They do not care who gets hurt as long as they get the money. They pretend not to see the evils of drug-addiction while their pockets are being lined with these ill gotten gains. Only when they get caught or are themselves addicted to drugs may they regret their greed. By then it may be too late.

Manipulate the Market

To see greed in action, all one has to do is to peep into a stock exchange or commodity trading center. In smoke-filled rooms we can witness the behavior of people consumed by greed. Not all the traders are greedy, but there are some who sweat, haggle and shout themselves hoarse so as to reap as much profit as possible from the frantic buying and selling of invisible things. There are a few who purposely manipulate the market for their own ends. The smell of greed emanates from their bodies despite what they may proclaim otherwise.

Greed and Hunger for More Power

In addition to the greed for money is the greed for power. The more power a person has the more power he seems to want. Considering the unceasing bickering, backstabbing and fighting among leaders and politicians it is no wonder the modern world is in such a chaotic state. One leader holds on to power by getting rid of his enemies, whatever the means. His opponents will plot and scheme to replace him. Coup-de-tats, up-risings, revolutions, assassinations and other political maneuver are all aimed at the seizure for power. The one in power holds on tightly. In time he is dislodged by another or by his own mortality. Thus the procession goes on. Individuals come and go, but the greed for power remains to infect all who choose to follow its path. What does this entire power struggle contribute to the welfare of our fragile planet? It is nothing, but a divided world with multitudes of nations fearfully isolating themselves from one another. In the name of religion, ideology and belief, the leaders of the world blindly lead the rest, but behind these excuses all we can see is greed and hunger for more power.

The Folly of Greed

So the greed persists. Some of us realize and desist from being greedy. Perhaps more and more will come to see the folly of greed. Then we may change for the better. We may leave our age of greed behind and go on to other better things.

Great social analysis Mr Ghaz. Yes, I agree the 20th century was an age of greed. The two World Wars happened in that century after all.

Excellent post. I am in total agreement with your title. We have been here before, “The Jazz Age,” where there was first folly and then the “fall.”

A great and thought provoking article. I don’t think we will ever lessen our greedy tendencies, but thinking about those much worse off than ourselves helps a little.

Another excellent article Mr.G. However, I feel that a certain level of greed is necessary and good for commerce and the general well being of the human race. But greed for power is the worst kind, for it is the kind which provokes enmity and wars.

I’m sorry, but the twist you take on Drugs and Greed is incorrect, but the concept is correct. People do not get addicted because their dealers are pushing on them: people get addicted to drugs when stuck in stressful life situations, and the drug acts as a form of escape or way to lessen their stress. THIS stress is brought about by overly selfish corporations who make millions in profits but pay their employees pittances. This is why people then get stressed as the bills mount, and at this point in time do people with access to drugs/alcohol use them.
The people demand, and the drug dealers provide. I am of course talking about all drugs EXCEPT the three dont’s; crack, heroin and meth. These drugs are pushed on people expressively for their addictive characteristics, yes, but then again…if the would-be addicts were content in their lives they would not have got hooked on these drugs.

I just found your paragraph to be very misinformed, if well intended, and you should look towards improving your knowledge of how humans work, and how greed works, and balance that instead of just claiming everyone is greedy and writing with the intent of having people agree with you. Why are you not contributing towards actually helping people understand THE WHYS of what is going on? Maybe then we can make better and more informed choices. Maybe then we can improve the human condition?

When is enough enough? Have corporations put profits so far ahead of ethics that human rights and the environment is merely an after-though in a board meeting? I’ve looked around and I don’t see a center anymore. The middle class is failing, the political center is gone, and religious moderates are allowing themselves to be out-voiced by the extreme minority. That’s where we are right now. We have to go to a model of global sustainability, political balance, religious balance.

We saw the failing of communism, and now we are gloriously seeing the failing of capitalism, the only thing that seems to stay the same is that of constant change.

    What do we do?

    Revolution.
