The Way “We” Define Ourselves

A reflection of the American Dream and our society as a whole, and what changes are needed to redefine this great nation.

Our society as a whole has killed its keen sense for intuition, but most importantly, it has deprived its self from the ability to create through imagination the most endless of ideas for creation.  The best example of this is found present in our every day system of our academic institutions; from the time a child is first induced to pre-school to the time he is subdued to the bureaucratic idiosyncrasies at a university level.  Ask yourself, how is it possible that it takes four academic years to achieve the wonders of a bachelor’s degree when it could possibly be achieved in two? However, we are urged to specialize in a subfield or pursue a masters or doctorates, when we could have started on this two years ago!!! How practical is this do you think? Picture this, if there was a so called surplus of technical professionals in the united states, what would that do to our industry, and would that solve the problem of having so many of the “Fortune 500 Companies” result into shipping so many jobs overseas for cheaper and in some cases for better quality labor? Yes, it would!!! So why do universities do this? Simple, the more and the longer students stay in school the more Colleges and universities are able to qualify for federal funding, and as result, create a certain degree of job security for the academic staff from these same institutions. Therefore “we” are systematic in our approach, but, because of a lack of imagination or common sense that is, are none the less practical in achieving such desired and much needed results.

A wise man from India once said “be the change you wish to see in the world” and 15 year after his death a young minister from Atlanta Georgia said “everyone has the power of greatness. Not for fame, but greatness. Because greatness is determined by service.”So how do we define ourselves? We define ourselves based not on what we choose to do as individuals, but on how we choose to uphold the same principles by which we have been preached, that have forged this great young nation by practicing those same ideals, and by collectively choosing to pursue in solving the many problems our society faces in present day America. For example, what would it take to organize our churches, our schools, and our neighborhoods to spend one weekend of every month to perform some sort of volunteer work like a food drive, help paint an old building, help plant trees, organize a 5k run for cancer, or anything that helps others in need rather than just going to service on Sundays, and praying that by some miracle one man in the white house can solve all of our nation’s problems, and if he fails use him as an escape goat when he doesn’t!!! By the way, in case you haven’t notice there are 435 elected officials in congress who can veto or pass any bill presented by the president!!! Having that said, we define ourselves by putting our petty differences aside and focusing on our similarities by volunteering in programs that not only bring joy to our hearts but strengthen the integrity of our community, and give way to a Newly United, Reformed, and Empowered America. We can define ourselves, by focusing on what brings us joy, on that which gives us pride to know that we are still well, and much alive. We can define ourselves, by focusing on our faith, our family, our country, our health and celebrate the fact that we can take control of our circumstances by coming together as one Nation, under God, and bring forth in building the new promises of today into an accomplished reality of tomorrow. God Bless and God Bless the United States of America!!!
