Forrest Gump's character exemplifies what it means to truly live - if you keep you promises (to Bubba) through a virtuous life you can become successful, through pursuing the things you love (running) you can become an inspiration to others (when the people in the movie followed him), etc. Forrest wasn't trying to be anything or achieve anything in particular.
