Toys in the Attic: Old School vs New Fangled.

by lanne in Society, December 12, 2007

Watching the holiday advertisements put out by the big box stores brought to mind these simple items from days past. Items that I am sure received just as many squeals of delight as today’s iPods and elaborate toys do.

Jack in the Box.

No plugs, wires or batteries needed to have fun with a Jack in the Box. Just turn the crank, and watch for Jack to pop out.

Marbles.

Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn enjoyed a good game of Marbles. I bet the game would become popular again if you could play it on X box or play it online.

Typewriters

What do you mean there’s no delete button? Where’s the spell check? How do I use the chat?

Imagine the uproar it would cause if today’s youth were asked to do their homework assignment on a typewriter instead of a computer.

Peddle Cars.

Yes, they ran on Kid Power, and not a 12 volt battery.

Roller Skates

No, they didn’t have synthetic wheels, Velcro fasteners or anything fancy, but they didn’t have to be replaced every year either. Just adjust the size and you were good to go.

Pogo Stick

Nope. No hand controls or game cartridges. But no chance of being called a couch potato if you had one of these either.

Record Players

The good old record player. A stationary unit that played a single vinyl disk played on both sides, producing all of your favorite hits with full rich sound. You couldn’t walk around with one of these dangling out of your ears, oblivious to everything around you.

Dolls

Dolls that did not drive sports cars, have cell phones or come with their own lingerie. Dolls that a child could dress cuddle and play with. Without it having to be plugged into a USB port.

Kids seem to be into computers and console games now. I can reme
mber having a big striped shoe bag full of marbles won in games…not always legitimately! LOL

This is a real walk down Nostalgia Lane. I really enjoyed it. Wasn’t life simple? Don’t get me wrong, though, I love my gadgets and wouldn’t like to do without them now that I’m used to them.

Very nice and the walk down memory lane is always nice if only for a minute. The Hoola Hoop is another that we loved when we were kids. I bought one at the beginning of summer. Thought it would help be slim down my waist…NOT! Couldn’t get it to dance around my big old belly even once! It used to be I had to stop it from exhaustion where now I am exhausted from trying.

    Good work!

Nice memories, remembering my games and toys of yesteryear. I loved playing jacks that was such fun. You could always find marbles around also, they were another fave. I wouldn’t trade my old memories of toys and games played for anything. As said above I also do like the new fangled gadgets.

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone. I agree. I wouldn`t give up all of my gadgets either, but wouldn`t it be nice if Christmas were as simple as it used to be?

It would be nice if things were as simple as they once were. Now days if it isn’t electronics and cell phones under the tree it’s the games to play on them. I wouldn’t want to give up my gadgets and I really don’t know what I would do without my computer but a simple Christmas sounds nice.

Aahhh yes, the good old days, things were so simple then and we didn’t even know it. I don’t think I would go back though.
