Violence in the Media

A brief introduction to the topic of violence in the media and its effect on young people today.

We live in a world of images – almost every home in the UK has a television, or several, and we are surrounded by the Internet, Cinema and digital television streaming throughout out homes from morning until night.  Ask any advertising guru whether the images we are party to day and night influence our decisions in the weeks that following and there will be a resounding yes.

Is it the case, therefore, that images of violence and gore should be banned from our televisions, in the hope that we can prevent scores upon scores of aggressive behaviours which may in part be attributable to the images we watch on our screens?

Images of violence on television (and also through the playing of ultra-violent video games) affect young people in particular, who are at severe risk of increasingly aggressive behaviour.

It has also been suggested that video games are particularly harmful in terms of their violence, as the person playing is directly involved in the game, not only sitting and watching it as a casual observer.  It seems particularly concerning in light of this that it is mostly young people who are playing these games, and will continue to do so as they become adults, and their children will follow in suit.

The question we must beg, therefore, is how long do we allow this situation to continue before we reap the results of it?

Of course there are many thousands of peaceful, gentle people across the Globe who play violence-themed video games and watch horror / gore movies and go about thier lives in a completely non-violent fashion.  Naturally it must be considered whether or not these people in fact disprove the argument.
