Warning Labels Degrade Our Culture

Today, almost everything we buy comes with a warning label, whether clothes, video games, kitchen appliances and even food.

So I wasn’t suprised to find.

“WARNING!” in big red letters on my bottle of Windex. What I was surprised about was what was under the big red letters.

“DO NOT SPRAY IN FACE OR USE AS A PERSONAL HYGEINE PRODUCT.”

Then I started thinking: What kind of an idiot decides to put this on the bottle?

Most people know not to iron a shirt while wearing it, or not to sign a bill or legal documents with a vanishing fabric marker.

A version of a Razor scooter put a warning on the handle bars: “Product moves when in use.” Excuse me, but I’m pretty sure I can figure that out.

Looking at a string of Chinese lantern lights, I found a label warning that the lights are for “Indoor or outdoor use only.”

Or there is the wheelbarrow that warns: “Not for highway use.”

The label on a Conair Pro Style 1600 hair dryer reminds us: “Do not use in shower. Never use while sleeping.”

Why do major companies, such as Apple, put warnings on their websites that tell you not to

eat your iPod Shuffle?

Another problem with labels is the ones that have no purpose at all. The labels like “Safe for animals” on a cat litter box are completely pointless. They only tell the buyer something that is understood.

These labels are put on products in order for companies to avoid lawsuits. We need to create laws that protect these companies from stupidity. The companies must not be held responsible for others’ stupid actions.

These labels make Americans seem clueless, lacking common sense.

Our culture already is looked down upon by many others; we are known as the “super-sized” nation because of the amount of fast food restaurants we have and frequent.

What is American culture coming to? Do companies really need these labels telling us that a remote control is not dishwasher safe?

No.
