We Are All Contributing To Our Own Demise

We are all caught up in the quicksand of consumerism, and it is pulling us under faster than we realize.

Constant erosion of natural resources has forced people all over the world, to flock to the cities to work in toxic factories, no matter how dangerous it is for them. It is all about trying to survive the best way they can. Sweat shops hire small children to work for long hours, for small wages and no benefits. All so the top dogs can live in luxury. The reality is that in this country, our value is measured by consuming stuff. It is mind boggling when we hear that 99% of stuff is trashed or stored as useless, after only six months of use.

People who get degrees in business, are drawn to the world of “Demand and supply.” for profit. This is a manipulating tactic to brainwash consumers that we “NEED” a product, so it will be in demand. When we buy it, it produces profit for the company making it. A term called Perceived Obsolescence, is used to purposely change the styles of items to keep them going out of style, so the new styles will replace them and be bought.

Advertisement is a huge business in itself to keep us programed like robots. They are used to keep us buying the newer and better styles on the market.   New and better is a gimmick that works for these advertisers, who work hand and hand with the companies who seek to put out as many products as they can, in the least amount of time.  To them, time is money, and the bottom line is always, “Profits.”

We are seeing more advertisements in one year, then we saw in a life time , a few years ago. They control our lives. We are brainwashed to ride this endless merry-go-round of consumer and trash.  If you have ever watched the TV show “Antique Roadshow,” you have seen how products were made for durability, and quality years ago. They lasted for years. Now we build products for “Quantity”, not quality. When some thing breaks down, it is cheaper to throw it out, and buy a new one, then to repair it. This is done deliberately by the manufacturers.

They use different sizes, shapes or types of screws or tiny parts inside a product so that it becomes unavailable , so it can not be fixed. Therefore the entire item has to be trashed to force you to buy a new one. They use dozens of different types of screws, or other hardware, so you have to run to the store to buy different screw drivers to use on  the item you are putting together. The experts are forever devising new and inventive ways to keep us having to buy things. It is an unending cycle.  We are all pulled into this web of contributing to unending consumption.

Recycling is a big concern. It is vital that we force ourselves to do this in every way we can. Many items are made where recycling is impossible, because of toxins in the product. These items are burned in incinerators which produce toxic fumes in the air. They are buried in the land. They are discarded in the oceans, killing sea life. We are creating a planet of waste and toxic environments, killing us all with cancer, and other life threatening diseases.

Curing cancer, or any other disease will not make a difference, if we continue to ride this run-a-way train to self-destruction. When are we as individuals going to learn to sacrifice our wants, and be satisfied with having our basic needs met? If we don’t do something soon, our future generations will die off, because of our ignorance and selfishness.  Things can make us happy for as long as they last. True happiness is when we have a desire to make the world a secure place for all life to enjoy. The love of money is the root of all evil. Those who lust after it have put us all in danger.

Powerful site. I agree with you pretty well. We need to fix the problem not the symptoms (cancer).
For me the true root lies in the fact that there are simply too many people, our population is far exceding our planets ability to deal with us all, and all our waste, we are raping our home and not controlling our population growth and yet we control population growth of nearly every other species.

I dont think money is the root of all evil. How some people act because they have money IS the problem.
    Good article.
