Wealth is No Guarantee of a Good Quality of Life, Am I Correct?

The quality of life refers to individual’s satisfaction level in different aspects of life. Except wealth, it involves different aspects at both personal and social levels, such as health, social welfare and level of cohesion. Wealth, as one of the satisfactions in life, is too little to guarantee us a good quality of life.

Having concentrated on personal levels, let us move on to social levels. For a society that can provide its citizens with a good quality of life, there should be a high level of social inclusion. It refers to the level of people’s participation in society and their willingness to accept new members into society. Under a high level of social inclusion, people are respected and cared for fairly in the social, political, economic and cultural levels. Also, people have trustful, appreciative and respectful relationships with their families, friends and in the communities. With all these satisfied, people live happily in the society and a good quality of life can be achieved. In order to achieve a high level of social inclusion, it requires the cooperation of all citizens in the society. This is hard to achieve and cannot be exchanged with wealth. Even though everyone is wealthy in the society, it does not mean that the society possess a high level of social inclusion. On the other hand, social exclusion can also occur in a wealthy country. For example, discrimination is common in Hong Kong even though it is a wealthy city. This shows that wealth is no guarantee of a good quality of life.

In respect to social levels, social welfare is an important element for citizens living in the society to enjoy a good quality of life. In a society with sound welfare system, people can obtain social security in education, medical care, etc. This is favorable to solving the problem of the disparity between the rich and the poor and the promotion of social harmony. Because of a good social welfare system, citizens receive support from the government and thus improving their living standard, which lays down the foundation of a good quality of life. Without a sound social welfare, nobody, even for the rich, can enjoy a good quality of life. Therefore, wealth cannot guarantee us a good quality of life.

Overall, wealth is no guarantee of a good quality of life regarding both personal and social levels. Certainly, wealth can satisfy material quality of life. Nevertheless, a good quality of life doesn’t only mean a material quality of life. It is both the material quality of life as well as non-material quality of life. Therefore, we can conclude that wealth is too little to guarantee us a good quality of life.
