What are We Hiding From?

Do we show society who we really are? Are we scared of being ourselves for fear of rejection?

Wouldn’t it be great if we could bottle the innocence of children? Young children don’t change who they are, what they like and what they want, just to be liked. Of course, still knowing what we know now, we could only portray to our peers and acquaintances, who we really are.

Generally, society dictates our lives. We have lost individuality and confidence in ourselves, which, once lost , is hard to recapture. We all need friends in our lives and people to share memories with, those are the essence of existence. So why do we insist on keeping our most true feelings and tendencies to ourselves? Why do some of us always feel inadequate? Society in today’s world can be cruel and kind. To be the best you can be, people often make the mistake of conforming to the trends of society and staying comfortable to create a sense of belonging. This is why society can be seen to be cruel. At some point, someone is going to penetrate your force-field, taking you out of your comfort zone and exposing you and your true ways.

This poses another question: Why do we hide from our fears? Instead of doing things to hide our true self, we should confront our fears head on. That is the only way we can grow ourselves. Take exercising for example. If we exercised as hard as we can, making progress, and, step by step, raising the bar. We will keep getting fitter and healthier. On the other hand, if we just go through the motions and do the bare minimum, we will be found out eventually.

In life, if we challenge ourselves, we stand to achieve more. So why do we second guess ourselves? Why do we hide behind a mask of happiness when, underneath, we all have a place we’d rather be or something we’d rather be doing? It it because we have turned into a society of quick-fixes? Or is it simply because the majority of us would rather the people we hardly talk to like us for what they think we are, instead of giving or own lives the time and effort it needs?
