What Can You Learn at Horse College?

Many people are surprised to know there are Colleges that a person can go to to learn about horses, some offer a one-year program, others offer a more complete two-year program. Back in the mid 1980’s I attended a two year Equine Management program at Olds College, Alberta, although the course structure has changed some fundamentals are the same. Learn more about what you can learn at Horse College.

f you are looking to go to a horse College be sure it has the following courses and options available to you. Even if you think you may not need them now, who is to say what your future plans may bring?

Foal Training

Every student is assigned a weanling foal and will be taught how to halter train it. This will cover everything from teaching it to accept the halter, to learning how to be led, tied up, and have its feet picked up.

Stable Management

Students will learn about feeding horses, as well as different stabling, and bedding options. Some of this will be classroom studies as well as practical work – cleaning the stables.

Horse Health

Of course no equine program is complete without an understanding of health issues in horses. Students will learn about the most common problems, and how to treat them, or when to call a veterinarian. Students may also learn how to take blood, and give injections.  Students should also learn about lameness, and how to prevent it, or cure problems.  As well mental heath of the horse should be cover – stable vices, and so forth.

Confirmation

Students will, of course, learn the correct names for the parts of the horse as well will be introduced to understanding “form to function” and about confirmation faults and what to look for. Often this will be in combination with judging horses.

Anatomy

It is very important to understand the anatomy of the horse, its bones, muscles, and other body systems.

Breeding

A good horse College will cover all the bases in horse breeding, everything from teasing, to artificial insemination, as well as what can go wrong.   This should be classroom work as well as lots of pracitical work.

Foaling

Foaling should be covered, with the college having an adequate number of brood mares for practical foaling experience as well.

Riding Lessons

Although it may be assumed that most people who go to horse college are experienced riders, this is not always true. As such any horse college should offer riding lessons, in both English, or Western, allowing the student the option of one or the other.

I never knew this, you certainly must know your stuff.
This sounds challenging and exiting. I once was interested in massage therapy and found ther were schools to learn animal massage. We must learn the best ways to care for our animals. Good info.

I really think Horse college is a great idea for anyone who loves and wants to keep horses. While they may not use some of the things they learn, it is all worth knowing and certainly well worth their time.

As Jimmy said, I too was not aware that there was a college to teach you all this.
