What Happened to Family?
How the meaning of Family has changed through the years.
It used to actually mean something when I was growing up. Holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and the untimely death of a loved one. No matter what the occasion was, we always put family before our friends and boyfriends/girlfriends.
As we grow into adults and begin our own families, we try to instill the same values into our children as our parents did for us. We believe that by doing this when they are young that they will grow up into intelligent and well-rounded adults, and continue to hold family as #1 in their hearts as we did and still do. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hold true for some individuals.
A simple word, but very powerful in its meaning. So why is it so easy for some children to turn away from their family and everything that it stands for? I still find it hard to understand how mothers and fathers can have a child, take care of them when they are sick, provide food and clothing, allow them to play in sports, and give them the best schooling that we possibly can. Then we watch as they turn their backs on us without a second glance. It leaves us as parents wondering what we did wrong. If we would have done this differently or said something else, could it have changed the outcome? Probably not!
It hurts me to say this, but maybe in this day and age our children have to loose their way at some point in order to realize what family really means. It may take a week, or it may take longer. Whatever the situation, I feel that it is still up to us to show them that no matter what we will always be there for them and will never abandon them. Maybe knowing this, it will make them understand the true meaning of family, and eventually come home again.
