What is Wrong with Twilight? Reasons Why Many People Dislike Stephanie Meyer’s Vampire Series

Twenty-five reasons why people dislike the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer.

I know that there are hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of Twilight fans out there. Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series has sold millions of copies worldwide and three books of its four-part series has been adapted into films, but not everyone buys it, and not everyone who buys it loves it. The majority of its fans are teenage girls, and I could see why many of them would be interested in Twilight. There may be millions of fans, but I could tell you that there are also millions of people who are against it and its hype. I have many friends who had read the book, and told me that they didn’t know why some people thought it was good. Hate is such a strong word, so I’m going to use “dislike” here. I’ve asked a group people on Facebook, “Why do people dislike Twilight?”, and here are their reasons, along with some of my own reasons:

1- “The protagonist promotes the ideas that girls should be docile and do what their boyfriend wants. Its degrading and sad.”–Brian Hartney

2- “Stephanie Meyer stole from vampire novels like Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire.” –Caitlin Mangan

3- “It is poorly written” – Just like what Stephen King said in an interview with USA Weekend, “[J.K.] Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”

4-”I dislike them because I feel that you could get the same thing by seeing a production of Romeo and Juliet as a lead in to playing a game of Vampire: The Requiem. Only without the pretentious whining; exposure to Shakespeare and getting involved in an RPG is the obvious plus.”–Tyler Childers

5- “The only possible redeeming aspect of the series is the author’s nudge that abstinence until marriage is the only way (which is unrealistic for many people), and she even manages to foul that up. Not to mention the complete and utter bastardization of two classic movie monsters.”–Soraya Alzught

6- “Sparkly vampires make me sad” –Mae Rock

7- “It’s simple; they suck”

8- “Its plot is ridiculous and the characters are moronic. Case in point, you have a kid who emphatically states he is a shape-shifter despite the fact that he can only change between human and wolf form most regular people normally refer to as a lycanthrope.”–Jake Johnston

I don’t think it really matters too much if everyone likes her. People tend to disagree. I prefer L.J. Smith.

The 2 main reasons I don’t like Twilight:
    1) NOTHING HAPPENS in 90% of the books. There is maybe 1 good chapter in each book. The action never comes in until the end.
Note: If you want a GOOD vampire series go read Sookie Stackhouse. Someone usually dies in the first chapter. She is a stronger role model, and you don’t have to wait 3 whole novels before she gets it on with a Vamp!

    2) You could create a drinking game surrounding all the times Meyer uses the word “Grimace”. Really??? Does no one in Forks have any other type of facial expression???

… i like all the books Meyer has made. She just wrote a damn story! A fantasy story! She just wrote a vampire story cause she wanted to! What’s so wrong with that? Why do you have to diss it so much. Its like people are trying to find faults in it. Almost like only looking at somebody with their faults and losses. That IS pretty sad. People say it ’sucks’ but there is no reason. If i say, for example, ‘oh um, the movie, Lion King sucks.’ Ok, so now Lion King sucks.[i dont really mean it Lion King is ok] How silly is that?
When was the girl ‘docile’? Bella did things behind Edward’s back in Breaking Dawn. Example, she made a fake passport without letting Edward know. Another example is in twilight where Bella goes to her old ballet studio trying to ’save Renee’ from a vampire, James when she was suppose to go to the airport to meet Edward. It shouldnt be degrading and sad if you read the story properly. It is quite amazing that you had to ask all those people to prove that Breaking Dawn waws bad. It’s kind of sad really, as if you have this personal grudge on her, all she did was write a fantasy story, none of it actually happened.
I cant rebut all the points[you gathered alot of protests] but it is kinda sad, only finding a fault in something. Do you ever consider what could be good about it like what could be good about a person? Surely, not anyone in this world could be totally pure hearted [born with original sin] and trying to find faults in someone is like saying everyone of them are bad. It’s really sad…

@Javaca1234 : a vampire story? don’t make me laugh…real vampire don’t SPARKLE!!! meyer has damaged the image of a vampire! And you know, jacob is not a werewolf! werewolves will change when the FULL MOON! Jacob is a shapeshifter! meyer also inconsistent with the story. vampire was already “dead” no blood flowing in his body, so how can bella get pregnant, if her husband is a vampire? can you answer that?

Oh, would ya’ll just shut up already? She wrote a freaking book about vampires! Personally I think it was a wonderful saga and that you twilight haters are all assholes! You have no right to go and try to find every fault you possibly can in her books! If you wrote a book, would you like it if every damn hater in the world started criticizing you for every fault? This whole news article is comletely ridiculous and it disgusts me.

If you wrote a book, would you like it if every damn hater in the world started criticizing it and acting like its the worst book ever? Think of how stephenie must feel! This whole article is ridiculous and it disgusts me that you think it’s ok to go and do that!

Let me sum this up for everyone:
    Edwards 100+ years old.
    Bella under 18.
    Pedophilia, and disgusting.
A 100 year old being, having lived a life of feeding on humans would NOT be attracted to whiny, pathetic teenager.

Lets not forget that it’s a giant “how to” guide for grooming a partner into an abusive relationship.
