What Makes The Philippines Poorer
This very brief article reasons out why the Philippines is getting poorer.
The Philippines has been one of the poorest countries in the world for several decades now. It seems that its economic status continues to go downhill, or perhaps go beyond the ground. The Philippines is not poor because of its natural resources. It does not become poor due to its beautiful spots. So what makes it poorer each day? Well, there are many reasons, but on top of all these reasons is the people’s attitude. It is true that many Filipinos love entertainment more than work. Almost daily, you hear fiesta celebrations, where young ladies and gays compete for beauty pageants; teenagers are excited for discos; some men lose thousands of pesos in cockfights and other gambling activities; women are exhausted in preparing foods (in many cases, acquired on credits) for the guests; men waste money on alcohol and get drunk anywhere; organizations squander on some meaningless costumes; children spend money on different toys that last only an hour; and countless local officials gather all ordinary people like trisikad drivers, beauticians, or vendors to an extravagant “salo-salo” to start earning votes for the upcoming elections. Likewise, most Filipinos are delighted of the many holidays, be it national or local, which cause many casual or part time employees to receive lower pay due to the “No Work, No Pay” Policy. During holidays, Pinoys are off to different activities which require them to spend money. Again, drinking sessions, videoke hang-outs, beach escapades are ones of the most preferred activities. The entire month’s earnings are already spent on a one-day holiday. But many of them protest against the government for their economic plight. They should reflect on themselves first. There is no blessing if evil and wasteful leisure abound. If this will not change among Filipinos, it is pretty sure that this country will be on top of all poorest.
