When Italians Try to be Polite in Other Languages

The funny effect of using foreign words in the same way you use them in your own language.

It is that people are nice and try to be polite, but in fact it sounds very funny. In Italian you can say ciao,or buon giorno to say hello and also to say good-bye, so many people use the same greeting formula when they learn those words in other languages. If they learnt during their holiday that hola in Spanish means ciao and good morning is the equivalent of buon giorno, this is what they will say. I can’t help smiling when people say “Hola” to me when they are leaving. It sounds simply funny, even more from an older person as it is quite an informal way to greet people. They say it with a smile, so not having the chance to correct them, my answer is also a smile.
