Parents who are in need of childcare often ask the question “Where can I find babysitters in my area?” The answer is that they have several resources by which they will be able to locate the services of a good, reliable babysitter. Not just anyone will do, however. Parents want to know that the person they hire will look after their children in a safe, responsible manner, and are capable of handling the job no matter what may arise.

The first way to locate someone is to ask everyone you know who has used a babysitter if they have any recommendations. Word of mouth is often the best method, and the best reference. If someone is unreliable as a sitter it won’t be too hard to find out from other parents. Perhaps someone who has a babysitter who is quite good at the job will be willing to “share” the services with you. Of course, it is going to be up to the sitter as to whether or not they are willing to take on another client, and if they have the time available.

Your best potential sitter may be the teenager next door. He or she may already be familiar with your children and be willing to earn a few dollars now and then. Often it’s easier on the kids to be left for a short time with someone they already know and get along with. You also have the added security of the parents of the sitter being close by. You, yourself will probably know the teen quite well, having lived next door, and will feel better about leaving your kids with him or her.

If you don’t have this advantage, you can always advertise for a sitter in your local newspaper, or check the ads for services offered of this type. If you are going to do it this way, however, it is very important that you get references and make sure you call them yourself. Don’t ever take anything at face value. No sitter is going to tell you that they were fired previously because they didn’t do the job properly. It’s up to you, as the parent to check this out thoroughly.

You can also call local schools or colleges to see if they have a list of students who are willing to take care of children when the parents are out. Again, check references carefully, and interview potential sitters face to face. Never rely on what you have heard or read until you find out all you can. You will be happy in the long run when you locate the perfect sitter that both you and your kids love.
