David Bohm: Friday Evening

Thought as a system.

So “thought”, according to Mr.Bohm, is basically where the source of all the trouble in the world today lies. And I do agree with him. Although the achievements of thought can’t be ignored, but still if we do actually try to go to the root of the problems, we do find a lot of involvement of “thought” in: bringing up the problems (i.e. causation), ensuring the sustenance of the problems and ensuring that either the problems are not solved or that their solution results in the causation of another further problem.

Of the ways that thought does all that is through fragmentation. Again I agree here with Mr.Bohm that even though thought has helped humanity through fragmentation, however, it must not be ignored that thought has broken things up in areas and into bits and pieces where it should not have been broken up. One of the main reasons why I agree with Mr.Bohm is that he has mostly proved his points with examples. The division of nations, the division of knowledge further branches is mostly done by thought, though the usefulness of this division is debatable.. But still I think that human beings have not or at least it is very difficult for them to seriously consider over the effects of fragmentation. And it is due to this fragmentation that we have false division and false unification i.e. there actually isn’t unification when it appears to be.

The next concept that Mr.Bohm explains about thought is the participatory nature of thought. We believe that thought only helps us in deciding and our actions follow as a result of our decisions. However, it is not so! In fact thought is actually making the decision and thus our actions come from our thoughts. Thought actually produces outward and inward effects in each person. Thought actually tries to disguise itself as being not participatory and as just being the source to telling us the way things are and that it is not doing anything. But in fact it is controlling and running us. Evening the case of fragmentation, thought is doing the same thing. It is actually creating divisions but then saying that these divisions are natural or pre-existing. I agree to this that most of the fragmentations and divisions appear to us to be pre-existing when our thought is actually creating them!
