David Bohm: Friday Evening

Thought as a system.

Thought being a system, is constantly engaged in a process of development, evolution, change and structure changes, although certain features of this system tend to be relatively fixed. I think that is because in order to change or evolve or develop, thoughts need a base with which to develop from or evolve from. Sometimes this fixed “structure” breaks up because it doesn’t work and as a result people may have to change it.

Another matter which I found interesting (yeah I did find many things boring and probably one of the reasons was lack of understanding!) was of “insight”. I had experience it even before reading the article that we have a habit in mind not to question things. We take things for granted. We don’t give much thought about many matters only because they have always been so. I think it is because of the ways we are brought up. We don’t try to break the old mould of thought. We ask the wrong type of questions. And even for our wrong questions, we want a quick answer. But the need for a quick answer, in my opinion, is not due to the urge to get to the next question but rather to finish the state of confusion and to relive the pressure that builds up. We want things quickly. We want our matters to be resolved quickly. We don’t want to remain in a position where we have to do too much thinking! And as a consequence, we try to get rid of the things which are actually a clue to what we need to learn.

In the end I would say that I completely accept that a thought of a certain kind will produce pain or pleasure or at least a memory of one of those feelings. This is because I can’t explain the happiness that is being caused by the thought that finally this reflection is over and I can go back to a life in which I don’t have so many confusions! :P . I hope I haven’t put too much thought in all this and have rather done some thinking!
