Modern Day Witch Hunts
The real face of racism, along with the effects it has on today’s society. A brief description of the terms "segregation", "reverse segregation", and "discrimination" to how they have been warped to fit the needs of individuals. A verbal attack on groups that spread stupidity, ignorance, and hate.
We all remember the reading ‘The Crucible’; a story about the Salem Witch Hunt. Every offender was hung based on an accusation of some girl. That girl had all her friends to rally for the same verdict…Guilty. Well in this day and age, we have the same thing; it’s called Racism. It’s evolved from the separation of colors to the “who’s-calling-whom a racist” competition between races of America. Honestly, it’s gotten ridiculously out of hand.
Now, when people think of a modern American racist; an angry middle-aged white guy is pictured. Well sorry to say, but he isn’t the only kind of Racist. Racists come in all shapes, ages, sizes and most importantly, COLORS. Lack of respect and other advanced forms of hate try to stay open minded; like the hippies. Except angry, all the time. Discrimination and segregation aren’t terms limited to white on minority issues. I remember hearing the term ‘Reverse segregation in highschool, and thinking “Isn’t that our goal?”. The reverse of segregation would be acceptance and the integration of all cultures without conflicts. How naive was I, right? Turns out that was the word for the action of excluding white people. That term is just a made up word to make white people feel better. I.E. “They gave Jamaal the scholarship because of affirmative action. Damn reverse-segregation.”
Unfortunately, it exists. It can be direct as those that disrespect public figures or celebrities simply because of their race. Or it can be the more “educated” indirect way of spreading ignorance by a group assuming they know what ‘White Privilege means. And yes I AM making references to the Facebook groups. It’s one thing to be proud of your culture; but to use your page to rally against what you view as “opposing” races, well see the second to last sentence of this article. In most cases it’s the ‘race-card’ that’s being pulled; we all know what I’m talking about. The famous four words. “It’s because I’m (race).” How we love using that phrase. That should be our catch phrase, shouldn’t it? Using this phrase assumes the one that the doing the confronting or making decisions is a racist. This, America, has become the new trend. Accusing one another of judging solely on a color, causing the other to justify themselves. Persecuted like a witch on the gallows.
Harvard Scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. got to the pull race-card when he was arrested for “disorderly conduct”. When President Obama spoke about Mr. Gates arrest, stating the police acted stupidly, he was criticized by the media, and inevitably being called a racist himself. Full circle. Who was wrong in this situation? Everybody. At least the the President realised the consequence of his poor choice of words.
In the end of it, what’s really accomplished after all the accusations? Who’s really winning the “race battle”? Some claim there isn’t, but if that were true; why attack another race?
