RuneScape: The Unacknowledged Effect on Our Youth

Many kids play this game called Runescape. This game is heavily addicting and can lead kids straight into depression.

Runescape is ruining the youth of today. There a thousands upon thousands of sweet popular kids that got sucked into the very addicting game of Runescape. It is pretty sad when one of the top searches are a video game. Runescape has caused kids to be cramped up in there house, days on end. Runescape and many other games are slowly, but surely damaging the youth of today.

Lets talk about what happens when someone plays Runescape. Runescape a is role playing game where you create a character and work at skills to be better. You may be asking, “Whats the problem?” Well the problem is, since the basis of this game is to be the best, players often find themselves playing for multiple hours trying to improve. Well lets get our priorities straight. Your going to spend 10 hours a day getting little pixels? I mean seriously. Runescape often leads players down a path to depression. This is because they sit there and play the game for hours and hours and wonder why they have been falling on the popularity chart. There are plenty of worried adults about their kids addiction to Runescape.

I realize that not everyone that plays Runescape is addicted to it. I’m just saying a majority of people who play Runescape are addicted to it. When people think of addiction they think of cigarettes or another substance, well in today’s youth the addiction is in electronics. To all the Runescape addicts that are reading this. I suggest you quit immediately. It is leading your life in a downward spiral. Some may be asking, “well what do you know?” I know all of this because I too, was a former Runescape addict. and I have seen a massive improvement in my life since I have quit.

To all the parents that want their kids to quit, have a talk with them. Talk to them about the consequences of their actions. Parents also need to encourage outdoor activities, take your kid fishing or play basketball with them or another fun outdoor activity. I’m not writing this to insult people, I’m writing this to help the youth. Youth is the Future, and don’t you want the future to make excellent advancements? Well let me tell you something, Runescape and other online games are not going to help at all.

true… I play runescape and I have to admit what he is saying is true. Once you fall under the runescape addiction you won’t stop playing for a long time. The days will be short and years will fly by. I know, because 1 year of my life has fallin out the window. I am quitting runescape though because of the updates they have made make the game not fun anymore. I can’t say that I’m a nerd, I just play runescape a lot. When I have better things to do, I have no problem logging out though.

Layne, I totaly agree. My story is about the same… Except the fact that I haven’t stopped playing yet. I stopped several times, but I didn’t miss the game.
I just missed the friends I used to talk to on Runescape, that’s the only reason that I get online (sometimes).

“Parents also need to encourage outdoor activities, take your kid fishing or play basketball with them or another fun outdoor activity.”
ehh… that “fun outdoor activity” doesn’t sound really nice. Anyways, if the kid got a hobby (not gaming), you should really encourage it as parent and give as many possibilities to do the hobby. (tip: give compliments on their work made by the hobby)
Besides that, don’t say “do not play Runescape”. In many cases it would encourage the kids to play it. Just explain Runescape is basically clicking for higher levels, which will ‘disappear’ in the future ’cause you don’t need it. Oh well, nvm, it’s hard to explain what’s on my mind. Gotta go to athletics anyways… >.<

    Sorry for the bad English!!

I’ve had close to the same problem as most people, I’ve been addicted to RuneScape (And, no, I’m not going to deny it) and I actually made it part of my everyday life.

The thing with it is that people tend to fall into the RuneScape addiction when they find their life boring or run out of amusing things to do. The thing that makes people strive to continue playing RuneScape is of course, rankings.

These rankings basically take over your head, it’s all you can think about. Playing RuneScape for a while and then stopping immediately usually results in the person playing it 3-5 days later, anyway.

There’s gotta be a solution to this, I know I’ve finally quit it, and once you do quit, you don’t find the amusement in it anymore. Just keep the rank worries neutral and it should be all good :)

As soon as I quit RuneScape my life suddenly became better, I have heaps more confidence, and I actually enjoy doing stuff with my group again… It’s really a shame to see so many stuck in the same boat I was once stuck in. :(

If you guys have even played runescape which I suspect most of you havent than you would know how fun it is. And besides addicted isn’t playing for 1-2 hours a day. Addicted is playing 24/7 selling you car and dropping out of school, which is mostly the adults that play, not the kids.

Runescape is fun. :P But also is playing football chilling with your mates, going cinema and just having a laugh. I play quite a lot. But I’m not unheslthy or anything like that. I don’t think about it non-stop. I mostly only play when on msn and no-one is talking. But anything I agree with the article. Adios! :P

I totally agree.. I to was a former runescape player and for over a year it dominated my life and severaly scarred my social life through out the middle of my high school years.. in addition video games in general have had a signifigant effect on me all through school in general. even today gaming is a problem with games such as World of warcraft which hit me harder then any game ive ever played.. VERY FUN BUT.. VERY ADDICTING.. and it also slowed me down in college for the past 2 and a half years.. i know that gaming addiction is new and not taken as seriously as it should be but this is a new issue. Just like drugs / alchohol , video games give players an emotional high, people like my self who socially where as popular in school have a serious weakness to the sense of escape these games offer. The key player in the addiction department though i dont think is games as a whole but the nature of the game its self.. ive noticed that with General games that actually have a relatively short span before being beat are a little more health where as MMO’s or massive multiplayer games with seemingly no ending tend to be the type of games that really get to people

It is addicting, im still having trouble with it if it was my way i tell you what i’d do? Well i’d shut down the whole bloody system every single world world 1-150 something Its distroyed my life, after this i’ve lost the chance to have a girlfriend, of my dreams to, as i wright this i am holding a knife to my gut. It ruined my life and it’ll ruin yours! Quit it while your young, i was stupid enough to do it in highschool i never passed grade 12, never will. As my life will end as im typing this, millions more will be addicted into other games, Runescape,Puzzle Pirates,Maplestory, and others as i leave this world i wish to say to Britney, Im sorry i blew it And the best way to quit before its to late, Gradulaly stop playing 1 hour a week till you only play an hour a day Then if your bord stop it completly!

    Good bye world

P.S Jagex you take an average 5% of your players to quit and fail and commit suicide like i am, I’m suprised you can bear that in your mind GOOD BYE CRUEL WORLD!!!!!!e2uyr92

You can become addicted to anything. RuneScape, as well as other games, can make people very addicted and have problems. At the same time, there are benefits. One learns the process of different ways of making money, hard working, etc. I have quit runescape about half a year ago. Looking back on it, I did spend way too much time, in fact I was level 110 when I quit. I don’t regret the work i’ve done, it’s more of an accomplishment. There is a certain point that a player will reach before he/she decides they do not want to do it anymore. I have played RuneScape since 2002

Now I’ll agree that Runescape is an addicting game and it has ruined peoples lives BUT the majority of people (like myself when I played) played within proportion of no more than 1-2 a night if not 2. After some time I realised how boring it was getting and quit. I think computer games are an extremely fun activity but only if you are playing for certain lengths of time.

Runescape isn’t the problem, the ppl who have to be the best are the problem. Playing over like 4 hrs a day is an issue. 2-3 means u play alot but arnt really addicted, 1-2 is what most parents allow there kids to play. I play a lot on weekdays, probly like 3 a day, but i do other stuf on weekends

What will you argue next?!?! All Johnny does is play football, he’s addicted. All Sally does is practice the piano for hours on end, she’s obsessed! It can be argued that anything in excess can be bad for you. Parents need to be involved and ensure that children get a great mix of activity. I play Runescape with my children and none of us share the weakness that the author of this article exhibits. It’s a game!!! We play it a few hours one day, 20 minutes another, and sometimes we do not log on for weeks. Please don’t blame something because you are not in control of your life and your actions. We all have choices in life of what we do with our time and our families. To blame an electronic game because “YOU” could not handle it would be no different than me telling people that cookies are bad because “I” got fat eating them. Duh!?!? If you don’t eat healthy, you will gain weight. Does that all mean we should BAN cookies and Runescape? My children are very young and they have already learned how to make decisions that you could not make for yourself and that frightens me. When my 7 and 9 year olds have learned to say “It’s a nice day, we’d rather play outside…..” and you, as an adult, became addicted, made poor decisions, became depressed, and THEN blame the game…..that makes me question you and your parents, NOT Runescape.

Hey all you people out there who play Runescape. I have been reading all these comments a this page and I just want to say I play Runescape. But here is the thing my dad gives me 1 hour on the computer on school days and 1 hr, 30 min not on school days. I just want to say I think all children should have a start time and ending time on the computer.

You should not stay on to long. I read in the news paper a while back that a boy died after staying on the computer for 1 or 2 days nonstop. I pomise I am not lieing to you people. People don’t take what I’m say very serious but they need to listen to what I am saying becuase one day it could happen again and agian. It can even happen to you.

I agree with Edward. If you can’t handle the game, and have no self-control, then just don’t play it. But to the people here with self-discipline, that can handle maybe 30 minutes a day of a game without getting hooked, this article is pointless. It’s all about YOU and your ability to control your actions.

I admit, I’m addicted to Runescape and I’m really trying to limit my play time, talk about OTHER stuff besides RUNESCAPE, and not make it such a big part of my life. I mean, what’s the point in clicking images on a computer for 6 hours, for just 1 million coins? I mean, they can’t be redeemed for real money, and can only buy you pictures in the Ruescape world. I spent 1 1/2 hours doing nothing but fishing, and all I got was hurting eyes and 10 fishing levels. I lost my self-control, and 30 minutes turns into 2 hours when playing RS. In drug cases, blame the drug. But in this case, it’s a matter of awareness and self-control. Once, I used to read and ONLY read, but since I took up Runescape for 2 months, I read about 25% of the time I used to. It’s damaging! take my advice and limit your time. Think about other things, and talk to your friends about other stuff. then you can eventually overcome this addiction.

okay, MICHELLE I’m a RuneScape player and here is what I have to say about this so called “Praying to Gods”. I play on RuneScape for 1 hour & 30 Mins every day. No more & no less than that yo. If there are people praying to other gods and that stiff on RuneScape I think I would know about it and so fare I have not see that happen on RuneScape man. Besides if it was thats kind of game I would not even play it at all because the only god I pray to is JESUS CHRIST and no one else.

I’ve have played runescape for periods of time on a few occassions. And everytime after about a week of playing I would go into a deep depression. I would feel sad all the time and felt as if I couldn’t stand to face the future. Eventually I forced myself to quit and a week to 2 weeks after i did my life was back to normal.

    On May 2, 2008 at 8:45 pm

Personally, I think that your inner strength and discipline will change how Runescape affects you. Those that are bothered by Runescape are differnet people than those who aren’t. If you want to play the game, go ahead. Just remember that it can change who you are, your personality, etc. My personal advice: don’t play addicting games. If you want to, be my guest, but don’t get involved in things that you aren’t aware of. But for those of you that play Runescape and are not addicted, good for you. For those that get addicted and are ruined by it, STOP playing it. It doesn’t matter if you make the highscores list, or if you’ve finally earned enough money for full dragon. Trust me, I know how it feels, and I’ve gone through what many of you may be going through right now. If you are bothered by it, don’t play it.

  33. The Sad Truth

    On May 5, 2008 at 4:46 pm

I used to be heavily addicted to RuneScape. I wanted to stats, the power, and most of all, instant fame. I almost achieved fame by making a popular thing in RuneScape, a clan.

My clan had around 50 people by the time I quit. By then, I realized that RuneScape was destroying my life, especially since I would log in for three or so hours… on a school day.

I never did make a 99 skill, or anything special, but I still moaned and cried when I couldn’t play the game. After a month (yes, a month) of not playing, I realized that it was just a pixel, and I should settle down.

It has now been 2 months since I quit, and I can happily say my life is back in order.

Oh, and to those making those comments who haven’t even played the game, please stop wasting our time by saying useless junk like, “OMG! NERD GAME!”

    Thanks for reading.

You have to be able to control yourself. If you don’t have any homework play for about 2 hours, but if you do, I think you should be responsible and limit runescape to let’s say one hour. And to people who think they need to be lvl 100 by tomorrow, in the end, it doesn’t make you a greater person. Just be able to manage time and control yourself, and always remember that homework and grades should always come first (maybe middle schools might be thinking WHAT? as they reade this, but it is true. You can’t get a great career just because you’re lvl 138 on runescape. Just be able to balance out your life between runescape and other things, there is no need to quit altogeher.

Runescape is indeed addicting, but after playing games like WoW, Guild Wars, or just moving on to high school and making new friends… I realized it was just a dumb game with bad graphics in which all u do is click constantly over and over again. Gaming companies such as Softnyx or Blizzard put Jagex(creators of Runescape) in shame.

My 15-year-old is very addicted to RS and has withdrawn or plummeted socially, academically and psychologically. When computer privileges were removed he punched the screen of my laptop (ruining it for good), kicked his bedroom television over and tore up his bedroom window screen with a knife. We are starting to see a counsellor. He also formed a dating/on-line relationship with a girl on RS whom lives provinces away–he racked up my phone bill within 100’s of dollars to talk to her and pretended she lived in the same town. It sounds easy for others to suggest parents get their children into more outdoor activities, or to compliment their non-RS strengths, skills, hobbies, etc, but my son refuses to repond favourably to these approaches. Instead he sits around the house, exhibiting instant anger at any attempts to communicate and blames me (and the consequences I delivered) for ruining his life. He occasionally has mentioned suicide since this consequence though professionals do not think he means it. My boy has changed from a lovable, curious and thoughtful guy to someone with behaviours make me unable to sleep at night. One counsellor is suggesting he now has ADD, but I know it’s more to do with an addiction to RS and a problem managing his withdrawal symptoms. I’ve enjoyed reading these comments and wish I could get him to read them. Then again, anything I suggest at this point seems furiously rejected. How do you make another want to change?

Some people don’t understand that it is not the game or the addicting drugs or anything that gets people to have problems for doing to much of it for a long period of time. people have a brain a brain that has had 1000’s of years to perfect itself. If you would rather think of it as you’re age as how long you have had a brain then take it that way. everyone can do many things good, not reasonable or just dumb and its all up to when they decide to do things that makes them have a good or bad effect but runescape like other big games are only that because of the people that play it. a game is someones work, art, or idea hoping that it will be (there can be allot of answers to this) a major game and they will make allot of money. ok well that is my way to say something that seems reasonable in my thoughts but i have been told im hard to understand talking so it might Imply to my writing as well. If you want a biography on me: i am 15 i played runescape from a bit before Halloween 2003 to a little past Easter 2007 i am guiding myself by when the rare items came out on the runescape Knowledge Base. so i have 2 older brothers with good grades i do think i was dumb from life till meeting a girl and according to a teacher smart when i want to or just dosnt find somethings interesting i wont right essays but i will right this just to express myself “was in a speech therapy class for elementary but then i moved and met her and i changed i guess”. my oldest brother 18 at the moment was the one that played the most and accomplished the most. other brother 16 got into making a pure for 2 things mining and pking. i tried a couple things from merchanting to making hard stat combinations low hp to 10hp with other combat stats high. i had always on the edge of quiting but played because my brothers played it and i didn’t have anything to do until i started playing civilization games witch was around Christmas 2005. not much changed for us during the time we played. i think it was because i was elementary during most of that time and didn’t notice much change in us and this might be the case for allot of people that played it before it turned so big. now i have a younger brother that we let play but soon got him to stop “age not important to say”. so i guess i stopped someone from playing the game but i don’t think any game is a problem because i think that it all depends on the person im sorry but some people die and some people life on each day but 1 small game can thing can turn into a “big problem” but so can many other things and all i say is its the person and the persons mind is all they have to make decisions so don’t try to change it because then you make a follower then who knows what might happen next.

I’ve personally experienced the destructive addiction associated with RuneScape. It all started for me in 2005 when I finally got high speed Internet. This meant I could take my infatuation with the game to a whole new level without worrying about tying up my family’s phone line. Throughout 2005, I went from a low-combat character with crappy skills to level 120+ with multiple level 99 skills. The time I spent on this game jumped from 4 hours to nearly 20 hours daily (at least 8 hours on school days). It’s also the time that I got obsessed with being in clans, working to fit in with the “cool” high level people in this game. My schoolwork didn’t suffer at this time, but I really became a social hermit. High school should have been the best time of my life, but it was really hard for me to juggle my RuneScape addiction and interact with real life people at the same time. My daily routine would be to trudge through school, then get home to boot up RuneScape immediately.

RuneScape was a major part of my life until the end of 2006. By this time, I was level 126, had 8 to 10 level 99 skills, and was worth around 300 million GP. My love for the game was gone, but there wasn’t much I could do outside of it because my social life was basically sucked away anyway, so I concentrated on participating with my clan. Even that got unbearably boring after a while, so I decided to quit cold-turkey in the middle of 2007. I haven’t logged into RuneScape since then, and I’ve been much happier.

It’s no use for me to tell people to just quit, especially if they’re having a lot of fun at the moment. But I do advise everybody to step back and look at life overall. If RuneScape is hurting your academics, relationships, or other important aspects of life, it would be best to rethink your playing habits. This especially goes out to those in high school. There’s so much I missed out on because I was too stupid to see the pointlessness in RuneScape. None of what I accomplished in the game means crap today.

I am 34 years old and I play RS. I started playing runescape about a year and a half ago. I would watch my son playing and he seemed to have so much fun but on the other hand I was seeing how addicted he was becoming, so one day when he was at school I made a RS account to see what was pulling him in so hard. Unfortunately, I myself enjoyed the game too much also :( . I had alot of problems irl at the time and it took my mind off of everything else. I became heavily addicted and would play sometimes 10 hours a day. Well heres a hint I played for a year and a half and I am a lvl 125 f2p which is almost maxed for a rs account :( and I did that in just that short of time. I think alot had to do with totally forgetting all my irl problems and playing on this character that was respected by other players I felt accomplishment and had alot of people who looked up to me , yes on the game. I also met during that time alot of people my age and older who play , most for the same reason that I do. I am at a point in my life now that I need to stop and get busy again because RS doesnt pay bills and it doesnt spend time with the kids, and it wont buy grocerys. And let me tell you its very very hard. If I am off of it for even 2 days I get so irritable and depressed and all that irl problems blow up in my face. Which is why IM here on the internet looking for advice. Anyway, just to say this is not just a childrens problem its a problem for adults also. :(

Right first of all, i’d like to make a note on how life is not about popularity this is clearly what you think. Yes people should stop playing Runescape but they shouldn’t sort after being the most popular kid in school. You should really be telling people to make friends with people they like for who they are, even if this means having friends on Runescape they play for and hanging around with (the less cool) of society.

My experiance of Runescape is of 5 years of playing, i’ve been addicted and i’ve been put of. You can slag the game of all you want but its a good game in lots of ways. It keeps people of the streets as do lots of games. The main reason stabbings, damaged and what not happen is because Kids are bored out of there Brains its understandble. Games like Runescape provide entertainment they might need to stay out of these situations. Also Runescape gives life skill’s. Communication , Being none judgeing, and even finacial skills.

OK so you shouldn’t spent your life on it, but balanced with other activites its not a bad thing in the slightest

I agree to this. You will get addicted to Runescape and you can usually tell if your playing a lot. I was once addicted and I played way to much. Eventually I quit after about a year. I moved on to bigger and better things (like an Xbox 360 ^_^). Though when I was younger, i used to be extremely addicted to it, and if you are addicted, try to at least have a timer or something to limit yourself from playing to much.

And to james, Stop lying, ok?

Yes, runescape can be very addicting. I used to play it a lot, too much. The only thing that kept me from playing all day was having to share the computer. If you aren’t careful, this game can quickly take over your life. What people don’t understand is those pixels don’t mean anything in the real world.

After pking was removed, I got Xbox Live, and let me tell you, it’s way better. Not really addicting because it’s just quick matches, you don’t need to train stats and things like that. All those people saying “Oh I play 30 minutes a day I’m good.” Let me tell you, 30 minutes a day will not get you anywhere in runescape. You will be a low level for life playing at that rate. Just accomplishing little things takes hours, and these hours fly by.

I never cared about levels and rank though, mostly just pking to have a good time. After quitting runescape, my life is better. I can’t say playing rs drastically ruined my life, but not playing will give you more confidence and self steem, and give you time for more productive things.

I’ve been playing it with my 2 kids (age 12 & 14) for 6 weeks & we have a great time.

Kids can get “addicted” to all sorts of things – football, fashion, horseriding…whatever…..they get “addicted” because they LIKE IT!!

Gosh – what a concept! My kids are not sporty types – both are nerds – the 14 yr old is a total computer geek – has written java since he was 7……I take them swiming and to parks on eth weekends…and we spend a few hours playing RS together too.

you’re weak and pathetic if this is such a threat to you – it’s not like it’s actually dangerous like drugs or unprotected sex FFS!

Okay,I am a Chritsian and I do believe everyone playing should stop.As a Christian you should know that there is only one God,and that only HE is the BEST and we are all sinners and should carry with them not a single thought that we are better than another person.First off as a Christian we all must think of what the game teaches that the Bible tells us not to do.

First off…Killing:The game teaches killing other people, even if virtually it still teaches us to kill people in real life.

Second off…Stealing:People in the game HACK and STEAL accounts and items for themselves, and even though the game tells people to report if someone scams you,It’s giving people the idea and option to steal, despite the fact that they know it’s wrong.Besides,It’s VIRTUAL items…Who would want that?In real life this would teach people to steal because it’s easier than working and earning things.

Third from what I know of…is idol Worship:People wear and do things in the game focusing on FAKE gods and Idols,This is no Christian mannerable life.

But now the question for those who are reading this right now is….”Will you quit?”

Don’t think that question gives you a choice for if or if not you should quit. The simple meaning of that question is that YOU SHOULD QUIT,YOU NEED TO QUIT,AND YOU MUST QUIT.

    When?
    Not later,not in awhile,but NOW!

  56. tevye

    On July 14, 2008 at 2:29 am

Hey Michelle, please don’t stain the Christian faith by imposing your interpretations on people online in the name of the religion. RS doesn’t teach anybody anything except how to have fun in an online game setting. If one is prone to killing, stealing, or doing other illegal activities, he or she probably learned it from a more serious venue than RS.

Secondly, log off your computer and go into the real world. You’ll realize that there are idols all around us, not just in RS. By idols, I mean distractions that people place too much value in outside of God. Not that I interpret the Bible as saying it’s wrong for us to find joy in things outside of God. You should recognize that God is the source of all the good that we enjoy in life.

In short, I’m asking you to recognize the inconsistencies in your logic. Nobody “should quit” RS thinking they’ll please God only by doing so.

    Peace!

i do not think anyone should be addicted to it. really just take the comment away! it teaces responcibilty and you can explore new places and meet new friends. also, it teaches you to work for something. (example) woodcutting and fire making for freaky forester, jeanie, of mysterious old man. -kathryn-

    I see what your saying…

I play the game to this day ; i started playing in sixth grade.
By 7th grade i was over weight and addicted. When i saw a picture of myself next to a picture of myself before i started playing runescape i got freaked out and my mom noticed it. She signed me up for karate and it’s the best thing she could have ever dont. Today im as healthy as ever. I go to they gym every single day wether it be the karate gym or a local gym to work out. Also when i played runescape my grades were ALL failing. I didnt care about anything because i knew when i got home i was going to play runescape. When i was failing and over weight this was all through 7th grade. When 8th grade came around i had already quit runescape that summer and was back in shape my graes the WHOLE year were straight A’s. All through 9th grade i was in shape and still in karate and my grades were perfect. I only play runescape during the summer and then when school comes around i know that i have to quit and i did last summer and this summer i will too. Runecape is VERY addicting but i don’t thing we should blame runescape too much. I think most of the blame should be torwad the kid. Once i knew that i was getting fat is when i decided to change. My mom just helped me and pushed me to work out and go to the gym and eat healthier. These kind of games wii always be there and theres nothing we can do by writing blogs like this. It’s up to the kid to quit or not.

    It’s partly true.
I’ve been playing RuneScape for 4 years and it’s hard to stop.Half year ago I decided to quit, but it was difficult.I still play it every day,but now my game time is 5-45minutes,instead of 5-15hours in the past.
I have some issues with communicating in real life,so I am forced to use RuneScape as a chat as well,:(
so your recommendation about going out and etc doesn’t really work for me!
and I would say RuneScape has some good sides :I am going to meet with some friends I know through RuneScape+ it has greatly improved my English.

Since English isn’t my first language,my “story” might have some grammar/spelling mistakes.

    Thank you.

Guys you act like it drug that everyone’s kids are addicting to. Its not gonna hurt anyone and I doubt that guy is actually kill himself over this online game. Rune Scape is a fun online game where kids can play a talk to other people if parents have a time where kids have to stop and do there homework etc. then there shouldn’t be a problem but if they start talking like they did in mid- evil days or they are side tracking off school then yeah have them stop for a couple days or weeks. otherwise there is no problem with runescape

I love the game on week days i play 3-5h and in weekends 5-8hours i think its great and as long as im having a good time i wont stop :) i kknow it can be very additive but i keep a certain amount of control. i got a girlfriend who i see everyday and i do stuff with in the weekends on top of that i do got friends wich a have loads of fun with :) .I also get very good grades because i first make my homework or study for tests after that i play. And no it doesnt do brain damage because i still have an iq of 132 and when it got tested when i was 12 it was 130 so it only increased (I dont think its because of rs though :) ) I played for like 2 years got a cb lvl of 112 and got a total of 1855 and some skillcapes. I do like to say there are true rs addicts who make it a full time job and dont longer pay attention to their ‘real’ lifes, these people need help or just have to realize its just a game! after al u cant blame the game,u have to blame the players

I caught my 9 year old playing rs in the middle of the night. I don’t know how many hours he had been playing. He won’t join any new activity because it will cut down his playing time. He even plays before school and we have a fight every morning to get him off. He’s an only child so this keeps him occupied. We bought him an electric guitar and lessons, he likes it, but in the last 4 days, he hasn’t touched it. He has friends and other things he does, but he doesn’t get excited by anything apart from Runescape. He plays football, chess, tennis – all planned events but any spare minute, he’s on the computer. Helpppppp….

I need a physical piece of equipment or software which will limit his use.

I agree that people should not play Runescape 24/7 or until 1:00am but it’s not harmful at all with balance. I play Runescape,WoW, Nintendo Wii and plenty of online games but I also do karate twice a week, rune cross-country maybe 4 times a week, have a weekly paper route and have plenty of friends plus an A average in all my courses at school. I’m in a healthy relationship and none of this is affected by any video games. So I will stay on runescape maybe 20 hours a week and WoW about the same time but I’m not affected negatively by it. Maybe it’s just me but it’s possible to find a perfectly healthy balance so why not try that.

I play runescape, and i’m quite addicted to it.. But I know it’s easy as pie to quit.. If you’re a member just revert to free play and you’ll quit within the month.. I know this because i quit once before, and a year later I came back because school wasn’t challenging me. I would say it’s ok to play runescape when you’re in middle school, but when you get to high school it’s time to quit. Because it is true, runescape affects your grades enormously. Quit when you start high school if you want to have a good rest of you life.

it is true…But i honestly think that you left out another important part, Helth, runescape is ruining the health of children what bothers tho is that, most kids are not aware that when they ,i guess, train there levels, they get very bored. and start eating more, un-healthy foods, snacks, ect. i think it’s crazy, every day i come home and see my son surrounded with junk food wrapers and soda pop cans, i have recently told him about the way he is eating and how it will turn out, he is now aware that he is eating way to much, he now eats when it is the right time. not when he’s bored. all in all this all leads up to me saying PARENTS: MAKE YOUR CHILDREN AWARE OF THE WAY THEY EAT WHILE PLAYING THIS GAME! PLEASE. FOR THE HEALTH OF THE FUTURE!

Yes though there are runescape addicts and the best way to cure it is to find new interests , or cut down. i play alot and just because i have nothing else much to do atm. when i do
    STEP 1.) switch computer of
    2.) do it
3.) dont play too much n dont let itinterfier with life!

The down fall of todays youth? thats a load of b.s. if u ask me i play runescape and im not depressed niether are my friends who play we are happy and its a fun game. im so sick of adults who think they know anything about stuff like that like video games. wiether yall like it or not video games ranks 3rd in the intertainment industry in the world and i really dont believe you can get addicted to a game more like obsessed. maybe the parents should step in and say no to a child who play video games or regulate their time when playing. trust me the online comunity of video games is a great thing and maybe you should try it. might i recomend World of Warcraft

when i saw this artical i was ready to explode with anger over it. the game has some ducational quallitys to it. if you maybe took your head out of the clouds long enough to try the game and see that it challanges your mind and is just plain fun. yes it is a little addicting but its not as addicting as you make it sound. i love the game but i still find time to get everything else done. there are far worse games then runescape (yes im talking to you world of warcraft and god of war)runescape is by far not the worst. theres only a few kids dumb enough to wate there life on it 24/7.

alot of kids live in areas which just isnt a good place to go outside like, the projects or somthing. what would you rather your kid doing? getting into fights, doing drugs, getting involved in gang activity?. or playing a harmless game?

oh and some people think that runescape is bad because you can talk to other people, and you might tell them where you live..
well guess what. theres a thing called “chat filter”
it bleeps out all the curse words and you cant say stuff like “adress”, “email”, “myspace”, “yahoo”, and even google…so if you think that your kids are going to give away your adress, think again. give them a little trust, tell them just dont do it, even if the person is nice.

well now im going to tell the truth, im 13 years old and i’ve been playing for about a year now, and i’ve seen NO effect on my grades, popularity, or any of that. so give your kid a chance let them play runescape!

oh and things are getting advanced these days adults, your kids may know more about computers then you!

I was so addicted to this game for about 2 years. I used to fake sick to stay home from school to play this. I was also a member and I use to miss basketball practices to play this game. I used to play it up to 9 hours a day, sometimes in 1 sitting.

But I quit it due to boredom.

    Now I play my PS3 :) .

This game IS VERY ADDICTING so think twice if anyone who reads this is considering joining Runescape.

you ppl are like sheeps following somthing
all this guy said was that runescape could ruin your life if you dont take time realising rs is a game that wil suck up hours. but only if you let it!
which means that if you do spend more then 2 hours a day like me I played like 8/10 hours a day.
Im figuring if you play 2 hours a day lol you wont get very far in Runescape!
but ehm if you play 10 hours like me it wil proove you have no life because. maybe no friends maybe no other goals in life.
I should say keep playing runescape till you find somthing that really will bring you places. beacause runescape wont bring you anywhere! so do somthing with your time that will get you somewhere and if you deciede to play runescape sure you can only make sure you understand rs wont pay the bill every end of the month infact if you subscribe memebership it wil only cost you money so with this in mind :) play runescape with the goal that it should bring you an aditional fun in your life. but make sure you make new friends and get a job so you will be able to do stuf which will lead to maybe new friends and keeping curent friendns happy cause they olso pay you a beer now an then!

:) so all you sheeps this was my opinion read it take the advise and stop promoting Wow lol were talking about rs not wow :P

i started runescape late 2005, playing only 30minutes, now and then when my real life friend met up with me.
i got caught up in the clan/groups of people, having limited social interactions outside of the house.
I finished required education. Real people, my friends, moved on, but I didnt know how to cope without them. I resorted to runescape.
i became addicted, because on runescape i could talk to people, and be myself, and it didnt matter if they didnt like me because there were over a million more players.
i got trapped in the social side, runescape became my friend. my clan were my friends.
School work was hard enough, post 16 and having this social opportunity made it harder to put the effort into it.
I could spend al day playing games.
I fell into depression, having no friends in real life,
I became even more engrossed into runescape, feeding off the millions of people happy to be my friend, comfort me when i was down, cheer for me when i got levels.
I had to seek help for the depression.
It wasn’t just lack of social, but thats not important.
Runescape was my friend. so were my clan.
Had i not dealt with this sooner, i’d be playing on beyond my teenage years… into my 20’s and 30’s
    how lame!

    Runescape can trap you.
I realised last week. Ive been playing for 4years. I just bought a year’s subscription.
I had boyfriends and husband and built a family on a GAME.
A GAME!!! You can try to get out. IT will keep pulling you back in untill you are 99 in all skills. Completed all quests.

I had lost self-control. I was playing 6hours a day. Battling depression, with limited other activities. Its hard to cut down. Runescape just pulls you back in, ever inviting.

Im down to no more than 3 hours a day now. Its tough.
no more than 2hours in 1 go.
i hope to get down to no more than 1hour a day…
Its hard, until i break away, and get out socialising in the real world.
One day, i’ll look back and laugh that i ever spent hours, days, weeks, months, and years clicking a box, and watching pixels,

I could have learnt the skills in reality by now…

wish me luck in breaking the addiction

i played runescape for a few years but not to a great extent. I never really played for more then 2-3 hours a week and i only played on weekends. i have recently quit but my brother is still addicted to it.

When i played runescape i still exercised and lived healthily. To me, runescape was just a game to escape from the stress of reality for a short time.

To those who are addicted to the game, limit your playing time and find something constructive to do like building models (thats what i like to do) or read books or something. Dont think that playing runescape is an important thing to because in reality it is not!!

hey anon i have a question.
reading books and building models is about as important or constructive as runescape:D think about it. what do you have to show for at the end of the day (i do enjoy model making myself:D tyranids ftw!) besides models but are they important at the end of the day? whats the difference between pixels and paper or mini fake houses and a mini piles of fake gold? it just depends what you like to do on your time:D it doesnt matter what your neighbor or an avg joe such as myself to judge what you do:D btw i havent touched my account in a while:D ive been busy with cod: wow rofl it pwns:D so hey my message is… do what you like to do on your time cause hey how would you like it if people began to say your hobby was pointless and shunned?

This article made me laugh so hard…what’s the problem with RuneScape? I play it and I play it hard. The thing is, you CAN stop playing! No one will care if you didn’t get a big amount of experience or not. I mean, I know how the game is addicting and everything but you just have to remember that it’s only a GAME. There’s is no prize for being a no-lifer, just remember that you have friends and that there’s plenty other things to do! It’s not the downfall of today’s youth like the writer said, it’s only a damn game….

    On February 18, 2009 at 11:56 pm

Runescape is not the downfall of today’s youth. If anything it is the youths themselves.Anyway, if runescape is addicting, then world of warcraft must be like mega addicting because so many more people play WOW (like 10 million+ subscribers) then runescape (not even 1 million). If people say runescape is the problem, then they need to stop playing runescape and take a look at the world.

    To Ojama king24,
firstly, you play warhammer?, thats not models. building models is like making airoplanes and car models, not glueing together 2 pieces of plastic to make a bug thing.
Secondly, I was not condemning runescape (and if i did or u think i did then i wasnt) i was saying that its possible to go on for only short periods of time and not make it an addiction and then to easily quit (unlike most of the other people posting here). Anyway Ojama king24, I was suggesting ideas to people that are addicted to runescape to help limit there time and maybe even break their addiction.

I believe that the typical person’s Runescape problem is related to a general unhappiness in the “centroid of the mechanism”. :-)

Most of us engage in some sort of “escapism”. For some people, seeing “You successfully $verb some $item” a few thousand times disassociates them from reality; they start to believe that the avatar on the screen is *them*.

Now, add to that our built-in self-preservation instinct. The combination of realistic escapism (loss of RL identity) and the desire to live (and thrive … hence the drive for riches and power in-game) make Runescape have an effect similar to a powerful hormonal surge.

Not all people will be affected in this way. And, it’s not unique to Runescape. Google for “Second Life Addiction” sometime; read, and weep.

As most people have mentioned “It is based on who the person is.” I, personally, play Runescape many, many, many hours each day and I still am doing well with my social and educational lives. I’m in all Honor, Advanced Placement, and Duel Enrollment classes and am currently pulling A’s in all of them. I have scholarships waiting for me once I graduate, and I already have career goals set. What this proves is, if you have the ability to do so, you can play any Online Game as long as you want and still be successful in life. To all who disagree that is your opinion, and you are welcome to it. Thank you all for your time.

i have been playing Runescape for well over 2.5 years now, and i am very addicted to it. as the game gets older, it gets worse, i must say, though. many of my frends play, and that makes it more worse, when your trying to quit, like me. i quit for about 145 days on one account (Tropix1) and 210 on another (Tropix1111), but i came back, and started to play again.
i do agree that it is a waste of a life, and it sucks, but its soooo addiction… if you have any suggestions how to quit, plz post them here. (dont say anything like: just quit, sell your account, give account away, start playing new MMORPG, or anything like that, because its not that easy to do those things…) if you play Runescape, add me to your friends list, and tell me suggestions on how to quit, if you want to. my Runescape names are: Tropix1, Tropix11, Tropix111, Tropix1111, Tropix11111, and Tropix111111. thanks.

This is the best guid i have ever read. I think Rune scape is a very fun game and i was addicted to it as well. I spent hours trying to do legesy of seergaze and then i wanted to go fish somewere. It gets annoying because i could play 1 hour a day. ;/ :/ I did a quest for like 50 mins and then i had to fish for only 10 mins. That got annoying, but i quit. Unfortunatly i want to play it now. I saw that my grades were getting from e to a. This guide didn’t help me but my friend. I showed this guide to his mum and she quite his membership. I didn’t tell him yet that it was me. Dude i wish i could hug you! 5/5 guide.

Well I was once addicted to this game. I joined in July of 2006 after my friend got banned on another mmo named puzzle pirates so we decided to play another game. So we resorted to Runescape. I didn’t like the game much for the first couple of weeks but after discovering new things to do I got addcited.

So my friend and I got more friends in our school to play and we played frequently by going PKing. We got tons of items from this! By time come around Spring 2007 I got my first membership and man I was playing sometimes up to 8 hours a day! I was a member up to the point I quit.

I took alot of breaks from the game but when I got scammed around the new school year (2007) I was devesasted. I lost nearly everything from this scam. But my younger brother and some of my friends helped me! So I was once again playing.

Then out of nowhere around March of 2008 (1 year ago) I just got bored of the game and well grew out of it. So I had a drop party and gave away all my stuff except for a few member things. I still do have my account and I do know my password. I think I was a level 76 or 77 by the time I quit.

Now my social life and education didn’t get worse from playing Runescape unlike what some people say.

Just this past summer I got into biking and swimming and well I rarely if ever thought about Runescape. every now and then I’ll go on to see if any friends are on but most of the time none of them are on. I’m not sure if they quit or what…

So some of my tips are:

Find a new hobby or sport
Change your password to something random letters
    Give away all your stuff
Make new friends in real life
Try to play for less and less hours a day

I play runescape becuase it makes me feel better that other people and I don’t have people bossing me around all the time. After playing the game then I do something else like hang out with some of my friends and other stuff to pass the day way.

  144. Not important

    On April 13, 2009 at 5:03 pm

I started playing Runescape in March of 2001. I played Runescape from this day until 2004/2005. Runescape is a very addicting game but I enjoyed the years I played like many others. In 2004 Runescape changed to Runescape 2 (now known to people as Runescape but trust me it’s not) by changing the game they destroyed it for many of us “legends of Runescape” and we stopped playing. In 2005 I tried to log in to Runescape (the original version) and could not because my account was deleted (all my accounts were deleted. 4 or more years worth of work were deleted at the touch of a few buttons and I felt like it was wasted. Due to the fact that I had a break from Runescape I did not log in between the 6 month period where if you didn’t log in your accounts were deleted.

In 2008 I re discovered the original version of Runescape (now known as Runescape classic) and played on the server for 6 months. With boosted experience rates training to flats (99 in Attack, Defense, Strength and HP) takes around a month or 2 rather than a year or 2! I enjoyed playing on this Runescape Classic private server (opened to the public) and was even given a place on the staff team (adviser rank) where I was promoted to player moderator and then full moderator. I even got a chance at being an admin. As Jagex like to destroy my fun (like deleting my accounts from their game in 2005) they have shut down the Runescape private server claiming we have infringed copyright laws (we have but it’s their fault for closing Runescape classic!)

What I will say is that Runescape is addicting. Am I addicted to Runescape???

Yes and No, I won’t cry over not being able to play, I won’t have withdrawal problems I won’t be angry with people.

It is true what people say, without Runescape I see my mates more, I go out more I get fresh air. But to be honest if I play Runescape it’s cheaper than going out, the fresh air isn’t really fresh air in this day and age and if I go out I only waste petrol and money on bowling etc.

My life is better without Runescape but if the server I played on came back would I play again ??? Of course, because I love the game. In my opinion it’s not that bad a habit, I don’t smoke or do drugs, I don’t drink a lot, I don’t gamble. So is Runescape or any other MMORPG really that bad?

Not if you follow these rules:

Don’t play for more than an hour at a time.
( I have put in 15 hours + a day some times and I’m not even considered a serious player!)

Don’t play for more than 2 hours a day!

Get fresh air and eat/drink NORMALLY!
( People don’t eat or drink for hour’s even days because they forget the world around them is moving by)

Remember it is only a game
( If you lose a r2h or a stake or whatever it is JUST A GAME!)( This rule will be easier if you follow the play no more than 2 hours a day rule)

Don’t let it rule your life.
( If someone invites you out to do something and you wanted to play Runescape then go out. Runescape is open 24/7 you can play later)

Parents: If need be take the computer away, this game can affect your child/children’s life!

I started playing Runescape in March 2001, I was 13 about to turn 14 and I would never recommend a MMORPG (Mass Multiplayer Online Roll Playing Game) to a child or anyone in that fact.

Having said that I am designing one!

Who knows if I will play Runescape Classic again, if the private server is brought back then yes if not then no, who knows!

Thanks for reading, I hope something in there helps you.

Disclaimer: My post contains proper spelling and grammar.

I\’ve been playing RS off and on since September of \’02. I\’m now nineteen years old. I\’ve played for maybe eight of the last twelve months, but the thing is, lately I\’ve been playing /constantly/. I do almost nothing else. Hour after hour, day after day, it\’s RS, RS, RS. Oh, I accomplished some things in-game, certainly… but…

Last night my membership expired. When I went to renew it, something messed up and Jagex refused to accept my payment. This caused a huge emotional crash; I was angry and frustrated because I couldn\’t get on to work on my skills or cook food or some such. My head was swimming with rage, and when I suddenly realized just how I was feeling over a video game, it became extremely clear to me that I am addicted to this game and that it\’s time to quit.

For a while I\’ve had misgivings about quitting RuneScape because I think \”What will happen to all my accomplishments, my stats, my equipment, all the items I collected and such?\” The fact is, I\’m putting more value into my account than I should be. It\’s just a game and I need to fully understand that; I suppose it\’s just part of the quitting process. The only reason I have to log in now, every hour or so, is because there are a couple friends I\’ve made that I don\’t want to lose, so I\’m going to find other ways to keep in touch with them. After that, I\’m uninstalling SwiftKit and RuneScape is gone.

I\’m antisocial and depressed. I don\’t know if RuneScape is the, or a, cause of that, but I suppose I might as well give it the boot and see if it helps.

    Wish me luck, guys. =)

Oh, and if you feel like inflating your e-peen by making fun of me here: Do it. I don\’t care. I\’m never visiting this page again; I\’ve came, I read the article and those comments whose English I could actually understand, and now I\’m leaving my own mark. Have fun embarrassing yourself in front of those of us with brains.

I agree this devil like game and cancer to my family has ruined my relationship with my wife of 11 years together 18 , my wife Myrna Estrada started playing runscape after she got hooked from helping my kids , when they would play.they would ask her to help in playing game and sisnce then she has her own account/s. it all started in late 2007..My wife age 36 now, mother of 4 , ages 2, 8 , 13 and 18 started playing for hours and hours , on and off during the day, all nite n to early morning hours. she stopped being a loving peson, stopped interacting with me , her husband and our kids even.

friedns and family would comeover and she would rather be locked up in room playing game instead of socializing.
it has come to the point that we are on verge of divorce.
she stopped sleeping with me and would come to bed when im getting up in morning ready to go to work. her demeanor and person has changed so much that shes lost weight and is so addicted to game that , shes even found someone and has started emailing this younger guy online that she ’s made think that she is 17 years old and that she is single , notmarried or has kids. she s haiving onlne affairs with random guys and is now currently i feel in love with this one guy thats no more than 24 years old. its ruined our marriage and we are still living together , but are so far from living like married couple .I spent all of 2008 fighting and arguing with her about playing that game so much and when i found out that she having online affairs , all hell broke loose, she now seeing this guy in person and and has gotten to the point to where she just doesnt care about our relationship or marriage, she says she not going to stop playing and or stop talking to her online boyfriend. i am so hurt nad so sad and confused in how she has let this game take over her life and how she let her self cross the line of letting her self think its ok , to fool guys online in to believing shes single and fallen in love.

there is so much more to how runscape has chnaged my wife and hows it s damaged our marriage..i have prayed , i have cried,
i have bagged her to stop the game and even more importantly to stop chatting with this guy online in game each and eveynite , and now see lies to me and goes out duringthe week and goes to see this guy in person..she denys it , but her actionas say it all. this behavior never existed in out home and in our marriage. it’s to the point that she blamed me for how shes become and says its my fault she is the way she is , and says she doing nothing wrong when she plays game and denys the affair.

she has not slept with me as husband and wifes do since July 2008 and she still plays game eacha nd everyday , she doesnt work , so she willplay allnite in to early mornings 3:30 am to 4:30 am its so sad,,i am trying to stay strong and just pray she will stop playing game and more importantly stops this affair she has with young punk she is seeing that she met on game. This game is poison , its the devil, and its a cancer. its now April 2009 and there is no sign of an end to the damage this game has done to my wife and my family

No matter what ive have said , no matter what i’ve done , nothing seems to work to get my wife to stop her addiction to game and the affair she has let her self get in to with the loser that plays online as much as she does.. Please pray for me family and I Ask the Lord help my family and to bring the holy spirit in to my home and in to my wife to stop this once and for all. and I pray that ll the other family’s that have similar situations , to bring a stop to the addiction thier love one have to this game aswell.

  150. My Story

    On May 9, 2009 at 12:47 am

I’m 23 years old, I played runescape for a good 2 years in high school, maybe 2 hours a day, and I was fine. However, My dad started to play the game too, which i thought was awesome, more family time. Soon it became “Dad lets go play catch!” “No, I’m pking to get some full rune”, etc.

He was addicted. To make a long story short, my parents got divorced because we couldn’t stop him from playing. He completely ignored his REAL life.

Almost all of the people posting on this forum are completely ignorant to the definition of an addiction. Do you honestly think that people plan to get addicted? It starts of as just once, just to try it, then a few more times, then your eventually hooked.

This is a very important concept that I hope you all will understand. NOONE PLANS TO GET ADDICTED. End of story.

Jagex and blizzard alike along with other companies are creating these MMORPG’s as a way of making money for their business. This potential addiction is a business tactic. It makes money. Just like nicotine in cigarettes, you just can’t help coming back for more.

I understand your apprehension in believing me. If it helps, I’ll let you know that I’ve been an avid gamer for my entire life. I just don’t do MMORPGs after seeing one help to tear my family apart.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not play runescape. You will become addicted unless you have a short attention span. I pray that everyone hooked on these games finds a way to get out.

    ~ –PLEASE READ– ~
#150 by My story, i agree with you. im an addict on runescape and i am trying to quit. i used to play like 2 to 12 hours a day, now i only play for like 5 to 30 minutes a day. im a Christian and i believe that runescape can ruin lives, and i hope and pray for runescape addicts and that they will quit.
good luck to all you “try-to-quit”ers.
p.s. i had another post on here from a long time ago, but i cant find it any more. it was the one that says something like: “my runescape names are Tropix1, Tropix11, Tropix111, Tropix1111, Tropix11111, and Tropix111111″ it talks about how i was a major addict and how i wasted so much time on it, and how i wanted to “live a real life, not a virtual one”, or something like that.
–also, i have noticed on a lot of other comments that say something like: “quit now, not later!” or “its just a stupid game; its not like drugs!” or “randomely change your password. then you will not be able to play any more.” – these things are easily said, but are far too hard to do when you are in a situation when you are an ok player, and have played for over 3.25 years… then, its near impossible to stop….
i quit for about 60 days or so, and i found lots of other fun things to do, like shoot BB guns and airsoft guns, ride bikes, spend time with frends, and drive my Traxxas Slash remote controlled car. also, i am not addicted to this, but http://www.craigslist.org (not .com) has been a fun thing for me to do. i sold some useless things, like pokemon cards, video games, toys, etc.
sience i started playing i have became lazy, gained weight, and gave up lots of other tallents that i have, like drawing, selling things (in garage sales and things like that), paintint Warhammer figures…
i am a 14 year old boy, and i know what it is like to be addicted to runescape….
add Tropix1111 or Tropix111111 (on runescape, if you play) to talk about quitting or whatever. i would like to give out an email address, but i dont want to get a bunch of crap, and i dont want my email address to be spammed and sold to companies and things like that. my youtube name is “Tropixangels”, and if you want to, send me messages there or something like that.
on youtube, i have only one video made by me, and it sucks, so feel free to rate it poor, but plese dont put crap comments that could make other people mad. check out my favorites on youtube and see if you like any of them as well.
    p.s.s. wow… that was a long p.s… lol
    bye for now!

I`m going to have to disagree with that playing runescape can make you depressed.I cut myself for a year and then i started playing runescape,i quit cutting cause i was able to focus on something else other than my life.

Runescape CAN be addictive to OTHER people. But alot of people i know who play it,only play it 2 hours a day at the most.I mean lots of people play it alot, but its there life. And if parents have a problem with it they shouldnt have bought the membership?Theres not much can do as a free player. But members open a lot of new things.

And no one MEANS to get addicted, they just do.The whole world is trying to get you to do something.Food,tv,phones everything. If you can refuse some of it…why cant you refuse r unescape,Its not that hard.

This is a rediculous! i play games for about an hour a day, if i want to play more I WILL! And when you wanna stop you get up and press the button or the X button on the top of the screen! If you have an addiction to games then something is wrong!

I hate it when people blame games for their addictions. IT IS THEMSELVES that they need to blame for their addiction. To think that runescape is the downfall of today’s youth is just stupid. people don’t realise that it is not hard to stop playing runescape. I am living proof that it is easy to quit.

Guy’s seriously. I have a bad-ass story that makes people laugh when I tell it to them. I used to play Runescape a long as time ago, coupled with Diablo 2. These kind of games do make you want to be the best and I wanted that. I spent ALL day during the summer breaks in middle school constantly playing Runescape and DII. Me being a perfectionist on games decided to download those autobots and what not for both games. I ended up getting hacked on Runescape and ended up getting banned for life off Diablo II. The funny part is that during these years of playing(I started playing in the 5th grade and didn’t stop playing until my first high school year.
I weighed 288 lbs when I stopped playing, and I’ve lost serious amounts of weight since I stopped playing 4 years ago. I got into MMA and wrestling and other activities and I lost 83 lbs gradually doing that instead of sitting on my ass for 20 hours a day playing a computer game. Life is short, don’t waste it playing silly games for hours a day. I mean it’s okay for maybe a couple of hours a day, but you have to draw the line somewhere.

  162. Garry (a dad!)

I stumbled upon runescape not long after it was made (I’m a dad, I’m old, Ok!). I made an account and very ocasionaly log-in to see what changes have been made to the game (often these log-ins are years apart).

I’ve always been a games player, from the early eighties! And like RPGs, so my interest in Runscape is only in passing. I have to say though, I think a lot of the problems kids get into with games like this is because most parents don’t understand the type of games their children are playing, and don’t understand how adictive RPG type games can be; whether they are single or multi-player.

Oh, and by the way; I’d say WOW is much worse for getting addicted to than Runscape!

Here’s what I think, apparently this is quite an argument, but I wanted to comment anyway. A little about myself, I have been a gamer for about eight years and a runescape player for roughly five. This year I graduated high school and will be attending college soon. I still play video games, yes you could call that nerdy, but that’s how I am. I want to say that video games CAN be addicting, BUT it is up to YOU to CONTROL YOURSELF! However, I see another problem with our society today. You see I had parents who taught me, sometimes even FORCED me to have self control. Not everyone has this blessing(yes I see it as a blessing). Open your eyes, be completely honest, and take a look at our world. Teens are depressed and suicidal, they think it’s fun to get drunk, and they think it’s fun to see their friends high. Why am I bringing this up? Because ALL this problems go back to a common source— lack of discipline and control from a parent. Today, we have replaced discipline with an excuse that we are “helping their self-esteem,” and look where it got some people? Dead and depressed. I am ranting because many people mistakingly blame the thing the person is addicted to, in this case video games, but the real problem is how they were taught. Parents read this and don’t get mad, take heart, man up, and take control of your child, and TELL THEM WHAT TO DO, even if they get mad. BUT, there is another step, TALK TO THEM, don’t become the enemy, HELP YOUR CHILD. I may not seem to be the most experienced or the most qualified to be telling you this, but just open your mind and you might realize that it’s true. So, in short, SELF-CONTROL and GOOD PARENTING is the key to video games. *I have to add this in! Try going to church or reading the bible with your child, it not only teaches your child patience and manners, but it teaches everyone how to make all aspects of their life better.

Hey all you Runescape people I just wanted to say that it is a fun game to play but everyone is looking at the game as a bad thing such as ADDICTING and more but what I think we should look at it as a chance to help people in the world come to know “CHRIST JESUS” and Runescape players should be talking to others that play the game so they can come to know him in their life too. If we had people talking about Jesus Christ on Runescape I could change the whole world and don’t think that it cannot becuase I was playing Runescape Recently and I came across a “RUNESCAPE MOD” that was telling other people about “JESUS CHRIST” and when I saw him I stop to let him know I believe in Jesus Christ too and that we should be tell others more about him. The Runescape Mod agree with me and we started alittle bible study right there on Runescape that day.

    Hello,
I used to play RS but I have quit about a year ago. I personally find RS a boring game, but that’s just my opinion. I believe that if you want to play RS, you have every right, but you should try to limit yourself. Playing all day is certainly not good, but if you play about 1 hour a day, it cant harm you. The same with any other video game. You should also do at least 30 minutes to an hour of physical activity a day. Eating properly, for example fruits and vegetables are also good for you. If you choose to snack during your play time, please don’t eat junk food like chips or candy, but try fruits and dairy products and grains. I hope this is helpful to anyone who has RS addiction.

runescape is not very fun and not addicting at all its like the got nothing better to do activity so its pretty easy to let go so idk why people say its addicting cuz its not just that is ur nothing else to do activity when ur stuck at home on summer. And i play lots of sports talk on ms but i cant get out of the house other than when im practicing playing sports otherwise ur stuck at home with nothing to do. Thats the only reason why im on here cuz i got nothing else to do but to tell u i play runescape and its not addicting at all

look….it’s about people’s personal choice. If they wish to play RS for how many hours a day, then that may be whatsoever they choose. Just dont tell people to quit just because you have.

Well if you’re in a relationship with him you have to meet in the middle. I completely understand your situation. Why is a game so much more important to him than you are? Men are competitive. They enjoy competing with other men and its natural. You really need to sit down, talk to him and explain how you feel. You can’t make him quit but you have to urge him to spend less time on it. Find that middle ground so you both can be happy. If he can’t negotiate with you than move on. Instead of enjoying the comfort of a beautiful woman he can enjoy a digital sausage fest and sleep alone.

Well This is my story I hope it helps someother people to quit as well.

I was a member from level 20 i loved the game at my peak i was playing 8 hrs a day for 4 years so around on average 6hrs a day i worked out i spent a whole year of my life sitting in front of runescape i bought member ship ($7.50) a month auto typer, even a bot witch helped me mine i reckon i spent around $500 on the game, after the 4 years i thought iv spent $500 wasted a year of my life and what have i got to show for it a couple of skill-capes and a name on a screen.

Well I think addiction is any runescape player who likes to showoff all their work of repetitive clicking, follows ‘girl’ characters (yeah right), says noob more than they should which is a funny thing since they’re computer geeks in the real world and skills all day like fletching, mining, definitely runecrafting, and especially woodcutting. Funny thing is : They’re useless in real life.

Ok well, I\’m gonna go off and tell my story of my former RS addiction.

So, I joined Runescape sometime in the summer of 2006 (probably July). The reason I joined it is because both my friend and I got banned on another MMORPG (Puzzle Pirates).

Well first of all, he started playing Runescape first after we got banned for PP. One day I went to his house and he showed me a \”new\” game we could get into and play. So it looked cool and when I got home I created my file.

Well in about a month, right before school started I say I would\’ve gotten to level 30 combat and I had level 50 Woodcutting and about level 40 fishing.

Anyways, this was back in Grade 6. For some reason that yr it seemed like more then half the boys in the school were playing that game.

So I remember, I think it was Christmas Eve 2006, I was playing it for about half a year at this point. Someone scammed me a bunch of my Rune stuff. I was very disappointed and I quit the game for about 3 – 4 months.

Anyways when I got back to the game in spring of 2007 my dad had put a limit on my playing. At this point my brother signed up for RS and the computer was either being dominated by him or me.

So yeah, my dad had limited us to 2 hours a day. But for some reason he forgot about it and we playing it for about 5 – 6 hours a day each.

So came the summer (2007). My mom had gotten me a 3 month member subscription for my grading present. At this point I was at level 65.

When I turned to be a member I raised my level up into the 30 – 40\’s for member only skills (thievin, hunting, slaying, etc).

Then school started again, this time I was in 7th grade and I was around level 75. I had played for so much during that summer my skin was fairly pale with barely if any tan.

For some reason, I will never know. Is that it seemed like the majority of players who were playing RS in my school the previous year seemed to have quit it due to boredom.

However, I still had 2 or 3 close friends in real life who would still play the game. Mostly we would go pking.

Then I used my leftover birthday money to extend my membership to another 6 months.

Nothing really happened from Sept 2007 – Dec 2007. Then came January of 2008. By this point all of my friends IRL quit the game to start playing another free mmo (FlyFF).

So me and my brother quit sometime in April – May 2008. We quit due to boredom and my membership expired so it was a good time to quit. I was level 93 when I quit.

So as of Oct, 2009. How am I doing? Well ever since I quit I\’ve occassionally logged on. Just a couple of months ago I had a drop party and gave away all my stuff and I changed my password to random letters.

So that pretty much prevents me from returning to that addicting game. I now play Basketball, I bike more often and I recently got into the Tech Crew at my school and I recently got into Airsoft.

For those thinking about quiting, how old are you? If you are a teenager of a pre teen for that matter and you are playing Runescape 3 hours a day, you are missing out on the best times of your life!

It many not seem like it now, but when you get older you\’re gonna regret playing that game so often when you could be doing stuff with your friends (IN THE REAL WORLD).

Anyways, that\’s my story. To those that got this far I congratulate you on reading it.

    You have it wrong.
    1. If all you’re worried about is popularity, then you’re probably in junior high, serious if you need the approval of the people around you without being yourself, then you’re the one messed up, not the runescape players.
    2. Runescape is a game, and like ANYTHING in this world it can derail you from responsibility. The same thing can happen with skateboarding, getting a girlfriend, picking up a new hobby, finding a new book series. If YOU lose track of YOUR resposibilites then it’s YOUR fault, not some game.

I play runescape, I play regularly. Call me whatever you want, my point is, I have friends, both in real life and in game. Some of my real life friends play the game. We have fun and hang out on the game. If it’s something you love then don’t quit because “It’s the right thing to do” Its a game. Have fun, if you stop having fun, play something else.

Personally, I still play Runescape, but (and im not denying anything) I only get on for a few minutes or so then get off because I get bored easily by it. It just isn’t fun anymore. I don’t think it has any effect on youth, I behaved and acted the same as I always have, while playing and not. (I play once in a blue moon now)

I used to be hooked on runescape. When I first played I only played with my friends irl. Then I met a girl named 5pirit and starting dating her, she urged me to become number 1 of runescape. We went out for 2-3 years then we broke up because she blamed me for the wildy update and trading update. After we broke up I realized how much of my life I wasted. so i quit and only go on to do new quests and holiday events now

It is sooo hard to quit Runescape for once and for all… I have decided that now is my time after playing for 2 years and realizing that it really did change my life in a bad way. Its hard to realize it when you’re playing the game (because you constantly have a goal you ‘must’ reach) but it really is a waste of time. I’m gonna miss some friends that i’ve made… I hope that, even if you are a Runescape player that you wouldn’t get addicted to it like i was. And also with other games… Because once you reach the highest score in whatever game you’re addicted to, it would be more of a loss then a gain is what I’ve learned.

    thx for the informative article

I play currently a lot. But it happens only during winter break, which for me is almost a month. I buy a month of two of subscription every year, and i play only during that time—nonstop.

Nonetheless, I have to admit that the game is not that bad really to break from. Just think about anything remotely exciting and you\’ll easily stop. I don\’t even think about RS until the yearly subscription i get. The other 11 months of the year i focus on my studies and internships and social life.

This article leans radically towards anti-video games and doesn\’t give (completely) accurate reasons for that position. I, personally, played RuneScape for a year or maybe a year and a half and got into Guild Wars (fears WoW fanboys devouring me).

There are people that are addicted to online games, and there are people that have an account, but play 1-2 times a week at most. Not EVERYONE who plays RuneScape, etc, is addicted.

When I played RuneScape (and other games), I spent a lot of time talking to other people. In Guild Wars right now, I speak (online voice chat ftw) to someone from New Zealand, Haiti, and Portuguese almost daily. I learn so much about the culture and world outside of my little America just by playing a game.

I take offense to the term \”pixels\”. Yes, video games often lead you to spend countless hours on achieving something that isn\’t tangible, but it\’s the \”effort\” and \”teamwork\” put into achieving that that is beneficial. In the high-leveled areas, you have to team up with other people and cooperate with each other. This is viewed as nerdy by outsiders, but I feel that sense of accomplishment more than I do in real life. The most opportunity I have there is to make good grades and get along with my friends.

In a world that is mapped out by satellite and sonar, there is little left for \”exploration\”…especially with the obsession over \”sanitize, don\’t stray from the path, uniformity in actions, don\’t be different\” mindset of today, everything is \”boring\” to me. I want adventure. I want to do something. I play video games. And I\’ve made differences in peoples\’ lives there. Those avatars are real people, too. I\’ve had countless opportunities to share my faith and counsel through problems with them, even though I\’ll never see them face-to-face.

So many people see video games as \”nerdy\” and \”stupid\” that they can\’t see any of the potential and experiences with real people that you can have through them, as a medium. I say the countless hours of TV that some teens watch are at very least just as bad as video games. Video games are at least engaging and should work your noggin (unless you\’re one of the everyone nowadays that just googles the walkthrough…then that\’s another story).

Yes, I speak glowingly of games, but that\’s only if played right. There are people genuinely addicted and need help. Oftentimes, they just need love and bigger shows of friendship. It\’s not always the video game that causes that. Social lives in real life are important, as are spiritual life, family, school/work, exercise, sleep, and so on. I play various video games daily and still maintain an A average, have a social life and great friends, and even manage to work out most days a week. It\’s possible.

I got addicted to Runescape about 3 years ago. I started playing it back in March 2007. I played it hardcore for about 6 months and then took a two month break. I tried to quit, but I went back to check it out (you know, to see how bad it really was and why I wanted to quit) and I ended up playing it again for another year. I used to play it for up to 6 hours every day. It was crazy. The higher up the levels go, the harder they are to climb. I spent hours in the coal mines getting coal. I read on a forum somewhere where one guy was saying he spent about 2 hours every night after work mining coal. When he told me he had been playing for 5 years, that was a wake up call for me to quit. I kept thinking “what the hell am I doing here making fake gold when I could be out in the world making real gold-money?”

I think like all other addictions, you don’t realize you have a problem at first until someone points it out, or the self actualization hits you.

It’s so easy to get caught up the game and the quests. The quests are the best part of the game. I hate level building. I hate fishing and cutting down trees. Completely boring, but necessary if you want to play quests.

I got up to 103 combat with my magic, attack, mining and most other skill levels around level 70 each. It took me almost two years to do that.

I have not played that game in almost a year. When I think back about the game, I really don’t know why I played it so much.

I do want to say this though. Ever since I quit, I don’t play any video games anymore. I now spend more time with “real” people and have more “time” to spend in other places. I am back to working out and having fun away from the computer. Maybe I am just sickly nostalgic, but I still prefer the old school games to Tetris and Super Nintendo games. Simple and fun. No playing a game for 7 years to level up to 99. What a waste of time Runescape was. I want my 1,000 plus hours of my life back!

  189. addicted but taking steps

    On April 29, 2010 at 11:56 am

    I am addicted to RS.
Runescape is not a bad thing in and of itself. Much like alcohol which is used by the vast majority of people in moderation (myself included), Runescape is only dangerous to those that for one reason or another abuse it. Those of you who post here berating the people who claim to have a problem are missing the point. This string should only be for those of us who realize we have a problem and are looking for support in quitting.
The game is deliberately created to be addicting. The points required to get to higher levels increase significantly but just enough so that the next level seems obtainable. The game appeals to my natural instinct for accumulation (the money rolls in at a greater and greater rate and the status builds with every new level.)
Advice for those (and only those) who really want to quit – the rest of you can continue playing by all means…
    1) Realize that you have a problem. The game is a time suck and destroys your ability and even desire to engage in more productive pursuits.
    2) Take steps to remove it from your life. As I know from personal experience, attempting to limit your time is often too difficult – why quit in an hour when a bit more time would payoff. The only truly successful strategy is to quit.
    3) Quit in such a way that you’re not tempted to return. Simply moving to f2p is too tempting. It’s too easy to sign-up as a member again. Either get rid of EVERYTHING in a drop party (or simply drop it for real), set your PW to a random series of keystrokes as some have suggested, or give your character away and ask that person to never reveal your pw to you again.

Hi. I am 14 years old now, and will be in 9th grade starting in the fall. I have played runescape for 2 years now, and have been struggling to get my playing habits under control. My parents have locked the website to help me not play, but even still I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s like a drug, once you have some you can’t stop. I went from playing for like 1 hour a day, all the way to 6 hours a day sometimes. It just completely consumes you. Whether the comments here are true or not, they have truly inspired me to quit playing. Although most of you see this as some random kid making this up, I am not. I haven’t played for almost 2 weeks now, and am have stopped having the urge to play. To show how much I am dedicated to ridding RuneScape from my life, I will give away my account user name’s and passwords here. I’ve listed every account and password I could remember. Go ahead and change take off the pins on the banks, and cancel the recoveries, I won’t be going on anymore. I hope others realize how much time they’ve wasted playing runescape like me, before it consumes any more of their lives. I started playing Runescape when I was 11. I have only tried to quit once since then. It has taken over a big section of my life. It’s sad I know, I wish I never discovered the game. I recently quit for a couple months because I knew it was bad for my health. I got bored one night and decided to go to check things out. Next thing I know here I am, addicted to Runescape once again. I have been depressed a lot lately. I blame part of it on me being cooped up in my house 90% of my spare time playing Runescape and the occasional other online game. I have even contemplated suicide. I want to stop I really do….but with an addictive personality like mine, its near impossible. I have been playing this game for 5 years now, 5 years of my life wasted, my highschool life, wasted. If you see me online, my name is redwaller66, add me and tell me to get off please please please!

A runescape addiction isint negative, unless you have trouble controlling it. Otherwise runescape is a good pass time and can help you in your life in multiple forms that isint easily seen. Also runescape wouldent be much of a popularity killer, because you can controll your popularity with simple words, and there are other people who play runescape too so youll have a large amount of friends in real life and in a virtual world.

Wow, comparing Runescape to crack addiction. Nice.

I played RS for two years or so. I got to level 100, bought all the items I ever wanted, became bored and stopped playing. The game never interfered with my regular or academic life. In fact, it made my life better because the boys at my school thought I was cool. Yeah, I was definitely popular among my friends, but that was not the reason why I played.

Runescape is just like any other game or activity. If you devote too much time to your job, for instance, then you’ve got a problem. It’s not necessarily your job’s fault that you’re addicted to working. Same rule applies to any MMORPG.

And to anyone who has been scammed or hacked. Stfu. That’s what happens when you start trusting people over the internet. Don’t talk to anyone on RS unless you know them personally. Your account will be forever unknown to the majority.

  203. Just wondering wtf?

    On February 23, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Still not understanding? I really read all of this and still came to same conclution. 50% writers have depressed about something else than a game. And its not just runescape that makes you wanna play them and skip school or something like that. There are so many games in this world. And alll of us are addicted to something. And if you wanna kill yourself over a game, maybe you should tell someone around you about your feelings so they can provide you the help which is needed. I think that 20% of writers dont know what they are talking about. And the rest 30% have played RS and dont have any depressions etc. So i really think that the game cant make u depressed. Maybe just addicted. Addiction always causes something else. And thats a fact.

after reading this, I feel like something is getting lost in the translation. It is great that you have found a way to better your life by excluding a game from it, but your argument is invalid. children choose to play it, much like people choose to smoke cigarettes. However, there are no “addictive” substances in runescape, only the euphoria you have while playing that you are addicted to. Is being happy a bad thing? and the argument with collecting pixel? in dungeons and dragons, you spend hours leveling and collecting gear for what? its all fake. for that matter, how many of you can actually redeem the guns you earn in call of duty? or get the diamonds from minecraft? good article, but remember to take moderation in all things, especially things that are highly addicting. Runescape for life!

Sure, the levels were awesome, and the graphics were crappy, but the game was fun and pretty addictive. Eventually, i shelled out money to keep playing, for new stuff, and better environments. I got sucked in. I still play pokemon to this day.
