Sociology

These are some sociological concepts.

I am currently living in a homeless transitional living house. It is apparent with the economy in a recession; more individuals are experiencing similar situations. So I am simply a microcosm of a larger societal problem.

Biologists, psychologists, and sociologists, each study people with different                    analyzing methods. A Biologist, studies living organisms, ranging from single celled organisms algae to human beings,  A psychologist studies how the mind works. Sociologists study the reciprocal connection between the individual and Society.

Society becomes an explanation of the phenomena, of unemployment and divorce. In regards to divorce, according to the text. Is generally influenced, not by a fight or a dispute but rather, one spouse finding a better potential new spouse. Unemployment is contingent on a social institution failing; this is true a great deal of the time. Mills would see these problems of divorce and unemployment, as social problems instead of individual problems he would, use the comparative method as vice to prove his theory. My example of a social problem that is often viewed as an individual problem; is the problem of drug addiction. Many people view drug addiction as an individual problem, however, using what Wright Mills, called sociological imagination, one can identify that statistically people suffer from this disease, all around the world. The drug problem is more dominant in some cultures than others. In one particular subculture, “where the social environment, they live is more dominantly drug users” an Individual will be more susceptible to becoming a drug user, opposed to a subculture where people are dominantly invested in individual academic achievement. “In my opinion, this is an adequate example of a social problem that is generally viewed as a social problem.”

Emile Durkheim’s explanation of suicide is significant in the history of the discipline of sociology. In my opinion because, he differentiated between 3 distinct kinds of suicide, altruistic suicide,  anomic suicide, and egoistic suicide  “which lays a foundation, for future sociologists in the sense that it gives a comparative method that will be available for scientists who wish to grow and expand on his theory. Durkheim’s basic argument is that suicide, is not merely a subjective act of desperation by an individual but is highly contributed by One’s social influence, with various contingencies, being perhaps, ties that are to close maybe being a religious cult. “Or the example Durkheim gave about the Chinese sisters.” Or rather not enough social ties which, according to Durkheim is a problem that is increasing, which is in effect to our common ideologies of Individual achievement, as well as other factors such as our society is becoming less trustful. In my opinion, Durkheim has an argument that can be tested with tangible statistics, therefore has a vantage point over empirical findings that can not be tested. On the other hand I think he lacks a holistic analysis, and should implement, the Individuality of the subjective mind.
