The Last Minority

Originally an essay I was writing for my sociology class in college, its taken on a life of its own, and I hope you enjoy it.

Society today is a huge mass of strong emotion, extreme prejudice, and many conflicting morals and ideals. We are a progressive people here in America, always thinking of ways to get ahead and stay ahead of the rest of the world, and the inhabitants of our own personal world. We all have and opinion whether it is based on how we were raised, the education we have received, or on how we feel things should be in general. Our opinions are very important to us, it’s why we defend them even if we are proven wrong by concrete evidence, and this shows us to be a stubborn people for the most part. We consider our nation to be the most tolerant and accepting of all people, ideals, and religions. We have broken down racial barriers, gender barriers, and political barriers, however now we once again face another minority that needs to be recognized as special and protect them with the same laws we protect other citizens with.

We now face the issue of Gay Rights, and how and why we should give these people their constitutional or civil rights, just as we have given them too Black people and other minorities. We simply need to enact the same civil rights that we have in our constitution now, simply including the gay minority will do, while I don’t think it’s an inborn trait in a person, who are we to judge someone just because of the way they live their life? We need to allow them to marry, and if they are proved capable allowed to adopt children as well, it’s the American way to grant these people their rights, and we need to continue down that path we foraged so long ago.

Now the main reason that many people don’t want to help gay people stems from xenophobia, the fear of the unknown or the strange, this is a huge factor as to why people deny these rights to gay people. Another factor in the denial of rights is that we are a country strongly based on Christianity, or more accurately what was the Christian religion back in the days of old, I think now that if you want to call yourself a Christian you need to stand up for these people’s rights, Jesus himself would have as he stood for other “sinners” countless times in the bible. A true Christian should be non-judgmental and tolerant of all people, tolerant and caring yet still striving to share their spiritual truths, that is what the bible and Jesus calls for. The third major factor in this political battle is that honestly the majority of people don’t see any problems for the gay minority, they don’t realize the injustice of wanting to marry the one you love but not being able too, some of our greatest romance tragedies have been based around this idea, not being able to be with the one you love Romeo and Juliet come to mind, sadly many think that there are no real problems for gay people and it just isn’t worth pursuing civil rights for them. This is slowly changing, more and more people are becoming more aware of the many problems gay people face in society today, and as they become aware they agitate more for the rights this minority deserves.
