Healing with Crystals: Amazonite

Amazonite, also known as the “Amazon Stone,” is a type of feldspar gemstone. It belongs to a family of silicates which are consistent in their chemical compositions and crystalline makeup. Feldspar forms about sixty percent of all terrestrial rocks and is the most plentiful group of minerals in the earth’s crust. It normally takes shape in tabular like crystals or short prismatic crystals and is light blue-green to turquoise in color. Specks of yellow or white are sometimes found in the masses.

Legend says that the name Amazonite comes from the Amazon River because it was once thought that this is where the stone originated and was used by Amazon women warriors as the stone of courage. We now know that specimens are not normally found in this area but mainly originate in Colorado (in the United States) where it forms in granite rocks and quartz. It can also be found in Brazil, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Australia, Madagascar, Russia, and Ethiopia. This stone is said to have been used in the breast plate of the high priest.
