Bixbite is a variety of red beryl that is considered to be a stone of love of the “new age.” It is an uncommon gemstone and sells for around two thousand dollars a carat.

Bixbite is a variety of red beryl that is sometimes referred to as “red emerald” or “scarlet emerald.” A relatively new discovery, it is a rare mineral that comes from the WahWah Mountains and Thomas Ranges of midwestern Utah. Other localities for this gemstone include Sitapar, India; Postmasburg, South Africa; Plumas, Patagonia; and Girona, Spain.

It was named after the Utah mineral collector Maynard Bixby. It is considered to be a stone of love of the “new age.” It crystallizes prismatically, meaning that it has four or more sides that are similar in length and width. On occasion it is vertically striated and at times terminated with small pyramidal faces. Gem quality bixbite is very rare with the largest faceted crystals being less than three carats in size. The largest bixbite ever discovered weighs approximately fiftyfour carats. The biggest faceted crystal ever discovered is just over approximately eight carats in size. Because it is an uncommon gemstone bixbite is very expensive and usually sells for around two thousand dollars a carat.
