LIFE AFTER DEATH IS REAL IN AFRICA

Is it scientifically proven that there is life after death? Is it true that there is what we call re-incarnation or rebirth? Can some of these claims be substantiated with any scientific theory?

These are the few areas where science and religion can never unite. Religion is only based on faith while science has its bases from proven facts.

In most African traditional religions, life after death and re-incarnation are few of their fundamental beliefs. These beliefs guide individuals in the society to lead a good life. It is widely believed that the person who leads a good life is blessed with long life and subsequently becomes an ancestor after death.

I witnessed some burial ceremonies in some “Akan” communities in Ghana and I was stunned to see coins being thrown into the coffin of the deceased. As they throw the coins, they say things as these: “my beloved, buy some water with these coins when you get thirsty on the way”, “give these coins to my grandmother who is already there”, etc.

“Akans” in Ghana believe in after life so much that, they make preparation and provisions for it in their normal life. Many indigenous Africans try to lead a life that will qualify them to be ancestors.

Before a dead is buried any conflict he had with others before his death is settled. It is widely believed that, a man will continue to live the type of life he lived on earth in the afterlife. If he was a wealthy person, he would continue to be wealthy in the afterlife, one will also continue to be king in the afterlife if he was a king whiles alive.

Various stories have been said about the re-incarnation and the afterlife. One of such popular stories is that when a king is being buried, other people are killed and the heads of those killed buried with the king. It is believe that these people will have to accompany the king and serve him in the afterlife.
