New Age Shysters
This article is essentially about the lucrative cottage industry that proclaims itself as a source for learning ancient rites, rituals and wisdom. It targets those people who are seeking answers to difficult existential questions.

To Quilter:
This was a simple request sent out to other Pagans and you managed to turn it into a commercial for RELIGION. I ran into the yahoo Alamogordo area pagans just before moving to Alamogordo and was told the entire group was all about the study of ritual such as that found in Wiccan. Now just in case you did not understand the first time: I am looking for PAGANS and not people who are studying religion. I am going to post again, please do not clutter up this simple post with another commercial for the YAHOO Alamogordo area pagans which has nothing to do with Pagans and everything to do with the study of Religion.

You have a lot of anger. Good luck with that new project of yours. I don’t think you will find any takers though. BTW, Pagan Pride Day in Las Cruses is coming in October, guess we won’t see you there either.

Wow…what is it with you? You don’t understand the English language? Anger? No it’s more like frustration in trying to do something really simple and have it over run by shysters trying to make money off the naive. And making money is what all those seminars and workshops are about that you insist on posting on this thread.

Notice how the troll makes the “you are angry” accusation when I confront his or her spamming of my post. This is to put me off my footing and get me to engage in absurd dialogue all meant to have an opportunity to continue spamming. By making the accusation of me being angry, the troll knows that I am likely to respond and therefore gives him or her another chance to spam. And of course all of their dialogue is dressed in language to give the appearance of a well meaning soul who is simply trying to help others.
It would be a mistake to think that all new age groups are somehow part of a grand scheme to fleece the public. The problems within the new age community are no different than those found in traditional religious communities. There are some good guys and some bad guys. And you can’t distinguish anyone’s intent by their clothing or how clean looking they appear. If you want to know a group’s spiritual intent find out how much personal time they spend in helping others such as the Katrina victims. You may not appreciate the small Christian Fellowship groups that are nestled in our towns and cities, but it is they who are first to respond to the plight of others and not faddish new age groups.
In your own personal quest for answers be careful of the shyster and if you are seeking to make a difference in this world then you might want to heed the words of Gandhi “Become the change you want to see in the world”.
