This essay will portray my growth in spiritual understanding. Through, studying philosophy, I will begin explaining Rene desecrates theory of the soul and end with a quote by bill hicks, through this explanation the reader will notice the change in my own paradigm regarding the soul. In effect to these synapses I hope the reader will have some grasp on the reason for my change of opinions.
Rene Desecrates talked about the soul being an eternal independent entity which is trapped inside this physical body. He called this, Dualism, meaning the soul is infinite and the body is finite, he actually referred to the body as a machine. “Note at this time in his culture people were primarily catholic. So his theory was quite out of the ordinary.
Now we will examine Fredrick Nietzsche’s concept that he called, “eternal return”. This theory explores the idea that we will live the same life over and over forever, so he suggested that one should live how they want to, so they can do it for eternity. “Seems like a paradox right?” Well Nietzsche was a bit of a philosophical entrepreneur. In his childhood his whole family followed traditional religious ideologies. Furthermore he was the only one in his family, to think outside of the common ideas of spirituality.
We will examine a quote by bill hicks now that for me was a total paradigm shift. This quote is in relation to quantum theories as well as eastern philosophies and some existential philosophies. “All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.” These words for me were the most beautiful thing I had ever heard.
Note that it was imperative for me to find understanding outside of traditional religious views. Prior to this adventure, to find something, I could believe in. I did not know what I believed in, however I knew I was not like the rest of my family. I did not follow Christianity, I could not believe in a loving god who loved unconditionally, with the condition that you followed him, and if you do not follow him you will burn in hell for eternity. In my opinion, religion is a vice to bring people to follow the societal norms. For example if you feel, that if you broke the law you might upset your “benevolent God” and burn in hell for eternity you probably wouldn’t break the law.
