The Mind/Body Connection

The mind/body/soul connection refers to recognizing and treating the whole being.

We are aware that the mind can affect the body in both positive and negative ways. Even though medical science has not been able to put a definitive finger on the exact mechanism through which this interaction occurs we do indeed know that it does occur.

We have seen the effects of mind upon body through the use of prayer, hypnosis, placebos, guided imagery and other mediums. The sheer power of belief or faith can produce miraculous results. People have been known to control their breathing and other body functions through meditation. Visualization techniques have been used in cancer patients to help alleviate the effects of chemotherapy and to relieve stress. In some cases, full recoveries have been cited.

Our mental and emotional states greatly impact our physical health whether we are aware of it or not. This makes maintaining a healthy mind frame even more important. Stress can cause long-term health problems as well as premature aging. Meditation can be effective in helping to relieve stress. Hypnosis can help one to overcome exaggerated fears such as in the case of specific phobias and also to break addictions such as smoking. Hypnosis has also been used as an anesthetic to relieve or lessen pain.

Positive affirmations and visualization techniques can help to improve one’s mental state by increasing confidence and consciously focusing on the positive. The power of the mind over the body is apparent, as it has been shown through the belief in prayer and medical studies using placebos. Although science has barely scratched the surface of understanding the full potential of the mind, Eastern cultures have been aware of the mind/body connection and the importance of the spiritual component as well.

Alternative medicine strives to treat and maintain the whole system of the being otherwise referred to as mind/body/spirit. Tending to the needs of the mind and spirit are equally important with that of the body. Healing must take place throughout the whole being in order for it to truly be effective and for health and wellness to exist. When balance and harmony exist within the being as a whole then health and wellness exist there also.
