Some people find it a bit confusing trying to figure out what is Yin and what is Yang, I will give some examples and hope that it leads you in the right direction with telling it apart yourself in the future.

Light and Shade

Angry and Sad

Top and Bottom

Sweet and Sour

Activity and Rest

Expansion and Contraction

High and Low

Above and Below

Up and Down

Fire and Water

Summer and Winter

Strong and Weak

Front and Back

Father and Mother

Son and Daughter

Firm and Soft

Hot and Cold

Immaterial and Material

Right and Left

The words on the left are Yang and the words on the Right are Yin.  One way to remember this is by always trying to remember that Yin is something that may express a very subtle feeling you get when you see a mountain in shadow where Yang is that feeling you get when you see that same mountain in very bright sunlight.  Yin can be seen as shade and darkness where Yang can be seen as bright and light.

Yin can also be seen as some energetic quality, whether it is in a person or a thing, being receptive-Giving birth and the power of nurturing.  Now when we think of something forecful, some strong activity, directive- Yang.  Nothing is fundamentally Yang or Yin though.

Some other associations and properties for Yin are Feminine, Passive, Receptive, Dark and soft.  Some other associations and properties for Yang are Masculine, Active, Creative, Bright and Hard.   Some symbols you may have seen for Yin are: Moon, Night, Water, Turtle, the Color Black, North, Lead and Even Numbers.  Some symbols you may have seen for Yang are: Sun, Day, Fire, Dragon, the Color Red, South, Mercury and Odd Numbers.

Yin – The Shady Side

Yang- The Sunny Side

The idea is that everything has at least two aspects to it.
