Yoga of Surrender
Yoga is an evolutionary process. It is a process in the development of human consciousness. Yoga is not a process of physiology or psychology or rather it is a practice of higher consciousness. Yoga of surrender leads us to unlimited joy and peace.
Yoga literally means ‘union’. It is the union of body and soul–Jeevatma (human) and Paramatma (Divinity). Jeevatama and Paramatma are already united ; but it is our ignorance that makes us think that they are separate. We see things like The blind men trying to know an elephant. We see things differently. Yoga can make us understand ‘God and we are one’. That is what Jesus Christ taught when he was on this earth. We are all united in the Fatherhood of God.
Yoga Aims at Harmony
According to the words of Swami Sivananda, “Yoga is an integration and harmony between thoughts, words and deeds or integration between head, heart and hands.” It enables us think straight(positive thinking), talk straight (honesty) and act straight(fearlessly with love and perfection). This kind of yoga practice can give us a healthy mind in a healthy body. It can assure us peace and happiness within ourselves.
Yoga Starts with Surrender
Yoga starts with total surrender or dedication. It is merging with the Supreme power both in body and mind. It frees one from the ‘thorny ego’. It is serving the feet of God. It is called in yoga ‘Pada dyan’(meditating the feet of God). The yoga of surrender makes one reach God. Man of self-surrender is united with God. That is what we see in the life of Jesus when he was anointed at the house of Simon.
The Self-surrender Yoga of the Sinner in the Gospel
We see in the Gospel of St. Luke the sinner woman surrendering herself at the feet of the Lord, anointing his feet with ointment. “She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment.” (Luke 7: 38) It was her self-surrender that freed her from all the fetters of sin and brought her to the bliss of God. It is the ‘Pada Dyan’ yoga of that woman that changed her life completely.
How to Practice the ‘Surrender Yoga’?
Yoga is practiced by exercises called ‘asanas’. there are a lot of asanas or physical poses of exercises for different purposes. The basic asanas of Surrender yoga can be Padmasana (lotus position), Vajrasana and Vajra-shashankasana (worshipping positions). Meditating God in these positions is the main condition of this yoga.
