A Misunderstood Culture
An Article calling attention to the misconceptions about the Gothic culture.
I am tired of the misconceptions about the Gothic culture. People assume too much about what they don’t understand. One of the biggest misconceptions about Gothic people is that they are warped and twisted and that their heroes are equally warped and twisted. I know first hand this isn’t true. I have many friends that are Gothic and they are some of the most caring people I know.
Allot of people think that the black apparel of many Gothic people means they are morbid or violent. For Example my sister who is Gothic was told that if she wore black that meant she was thinking about, had previously thought about or attempted committing suicide. This is the worst and most uninformed belief I ever heard. If anything my sister has found great acceptance and friendship from members of the Gothic community. All the stereotypes are based on ignorance and fear.
Much of this fear comes from the media. In the wake of the Columbine shooting in Littleton, Colorado, many media outlets called the gunmen Gothic. They were two disturbed individuals, simple as that. It wasn’t the Gothic culture that made them gun down their classmates, it was personal unchecked rage.
Many Gothic people I know are great, artistic, eclectic, open minded, warm hearted, and unshallow. For one tragic event to tarnish and blatantly stereotype a group because the media falsely associated the event with that group is simply wrong. My advice is… Don’t judge a book by its cover, dark clothing doesn’t mean a dark Heart, being different isn’t a reason to be hated, please think before you speak. Get to know someones heart instead of judging by appearance.

If you take the time to talk to the person next to you, its always a good start! That first step can sometimes be scary but it usually pays off. Marilyn Manson scares the pants off me and it would be difficult for me for me to say hello but I know that as a person he is just like the rest of us but way more creative and talented.

Please do not associate this article with Marilyn Manson, many people think of him as “gothic” he isn’t no matter if he claims to be, he is one reason among many why the gothic culture is so ostracized, he is the stereotypical media loving wannabe and changes when the mood strikes, and he is a very sick individual
Manson needs an insane asylum, he is a wolf that preys on the minds of young listeners and much of his music is depraved and warped.
