Amish Buggies Have Many Accidents

This is a story about the Amish way of life.

The Amish newspapers are chock full of reports of buggy and wagon accidents.

Some accidents are caused by the horse being spooked. One horse was terribly scared of the small plastic bags used in stores. If one blew across the road in front of him, he’d bolt.

An Amish girl was using a horse to haul lawn mowing equipment, when the horse got spooked and knocked her off. Both of her feet were mowed off as a result of the incident.

An Amish boy returning from a baseball game was coming down the lane when the bit broke on the buggy and the horse bolted. The buggy flipped sending the driver through the air. He landed and broke a hand in the process.

An Amish family was moving their turkeys for the poultry house to a field at night when a cage holding some turkey fell off the wagon and spooked the horse. The driver couldn’t get control of the beast, but fortunately running up a hill slowed him down enough to stop without any injuries.

In Indiana, the state requires a warning triangle – a slow moving vehicle emblem – on the Amish vehicles. However, in Minnesota, the Amish got that requirement lifted, but some still left the triangles on for safety reasons.

Amish in other parts of the country have learned the hard way by losing loved ones in an accident. Some have even turned to putting headlights and rear lights on their buggies to become as visible as possible.
