Economic Crisis for the Deaf
Deaf Action News.
Economic woes have hurt, dismantled and shoved the world into a stalemate. Hundreds if not, thousands have lost their jobs, homes and even their small businesses. Nothing is quite the same for anyone in this struggling economy.
1929- If the world could remember, this was one of the darkest times in history. A true stalemate across the globe when markets fell, money withdrawn from banks. People loosing jobs, businesses folding up. No one know what was going on. The wealthy taking their shares and money out of banks that were failing to protect their assets. The stock market crashed and the Great Depression would gloom over the United States and the World for a few years. Because, America was the “bloodline” for the world’s economy.
Repeat?
Are we repeating something that happened a little more than seventy (70) years ago? Lets hope not, because the world cannot afford to be plunged into another Decade of despair and poverty again. Let alone the wealthy get richer and the poor get even more poorer than before. We’re just barely floating with our heads above water and a “Repeat” is something Americans cannot afford. Yes we’re in the twenty first Century and often, trends do repeat themselves to make “anew”. But our economy cannot reinvent itself nor can it renew itself. We should take a history lesson from President Roosevelt who fought tirelessly to restore our country’s greatest past time.
Whose been Hit?
Virtually everyone, every walk of life and background have suffered some kind of economic lost. Even me, I’ve had to make a decision to end a good steady income job. Why? good question you’ve asked. Travel was too great for my car. Gas prices- another end of this story, have been sky rocketing out of control. Just for me to travel one hour and forty-five minutes to a job really eats a hole in my pocket. Now if you ask me, from my stand point. No woman wants to hear from her man, that he had to quit his job because of economic strife and is no longer the bread winner.
What’s being done?
I’m sure everyone can account for what the Obama Administration is trying to do. Everyone have had at one point either read their news papers, watched the internet and of course the cable news about the Stimulus Package. But many, including the Deaf and Hard of Hearing have wondered, ” Did it come a little too late?” Some have seen a change and some are seeing things go from bad to worse.
Local States Been Hit Hard
Budget short falls have wreck havoc on many states across the U.S. Decisions that Governors have to make are not favored by tax payers. Even the Deaf wondered will it affect their Social Security, food stamps, ability to receive services from State Agencies. Boards of Educations are making difficult decisions they didn’t have to face in a long time. Many are reconsidering “No Child Left Behind Law” have become an economic pain. Even now many have to revert to the “glory” days when schools had larger class sizes and fewer than perfect spaces for larger groups of children. With a freeze on positions and cutting of some really are hurting the children both hearing and Deaf. So many now have to abandon the plans of building new and bigger schools that were now technologically advance. But those dreams have to be on hold.
End in Sight?
Well again keeping up with the news, political analysts have predicted that the worst have past and the World’s economy should bounce back. Can it be true? That is yet remained to be seen. States now have to let go prisoners or crowd them into smaller, yet already over crowded prisons. But I know, many have said this one before, ” most only know this way of life and that they get three square meals a day” Well if they stop to realize, crime doesn’t pay and it in fact hurting the Tax payer’s pockets.
Deaf in Crisis
Now to the heart of the matter. Deaf People around the globe and right here at home are feeling the after affects. many loosing their jobs, getting laid off or making the decision to have to quit because travel was too great. Even what is hurting them more…State Agencies across the United States are limiting travel to serve the populations. Whats worse, those very same institutions have forced many local non-profits whom have served their Deaf Communities more than twenty years or so out of existence. This alone is hurting the Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing population. To sum it up: Economic Stalemate, closures of Deaf Schools in the past ten to fifteen years, and even lack of Community Support Services.
