Life as a New Yorker and HIV
Unlike notoriously conservative Washington DC, where gay men don’t live their lives openly and it is even harder for those living with HIV to make a living, New York is like an asylum home with open arms to all kinds of non-conventional people.
What is it like, living in New York City alone? The gritty, urban atmosphere of New York plays a role in the lives of all New Yorkers. Especially, during mid January, away from home when the cold winter snow is biting hard into your flesh, it is easy to remember that you nowhere near your door. Maybe, you got a block or two before reaching the lonely apartment where you live.
Imagine, standing on top of the Emperor Building with your significant other and watching New York City at night as a glows with everlasting prestige. Soon you step foot before Madison Square Garden, you see a crowd of mostly young prostitutes, all cute looking with their lovers, hand-in-hand, but deeply lost in a world of their own. It soon hit hard that living single in one of the world’s busiest cities such as New York is virtually impossible! New York is mostly for couples, not singles. But if you’re lovesick and looking for someone to talk to, take a weekend to New York City Central Park. There is always a waiting soul there, looking for company. Now, there is privacy for you to talk anything.
Like the say in Rome, when you just moved to New York, do as the New Yorkers do, don’t be too quick to trust but keep some smiles on your face so you make friends fast. Ask a lot of questions about who is who and why, so you don’t get into trouble. Next, visit a corner store to get yourself enough condoms. Keep it safe like money and be careful who you kiss too, because New York’s full of shit! But so long you stay by the rules you’re good to go.
Take the subway from either Queens or Brooklyn, via the R or Q Train for an evening walk down town Manhattan; Watch the traffic for fifteen minutes. Take a cab to Broadway, be a part of the populous atmosphere-a city so full of love all around you, frustrated and lonely; you soon take a commute down towards PAN STATION to find your way home. Getting chilled, you stop at the Dunkin Donuts for a hot cup of chocolate served in a medium size- Styrofoam cup. By now it is easy to think of picking up a willing young girl who will take a Franklin note for an overnight stay.
