Modern Day Indie Rock

A basic overview of today’s biggest Indie Rock bands, songs that made the charts and general Indie culture of the modern world.

Indie Rock is a music genre which focuses on rapid bass, often drums, and a quirky, electro-style rhythm. It usually also includes many computer generated sound effects.

Indie Rock is generally very easy to listen to, and has nice flow. Indie is not one of the most prefered music types in the world, although it is in fact a very large genre.

The genre is relatively new, only stemming back as far as the 1980s. It originated in both the US and the UK.

Indie Rock artists are infamous for their choices in managing their own career and keeping full control of their music, often using independent record labels – which can even be self-run or owned by the artist. If an Indie band become well-known, they will often switch to major label such as Polydor mid-career.

Indie Culture is anything uncool, worn or done in such a way that it becomes favourable and flattering. Indie often appeals to teenagers who brand themselves as Scene Kids, as the whole Indie genre is neon bright and energetic. Wrist bands, Indie Band Tees, Skinny jeans and Converse are amoungst the most popular pieces of attire, along with thick-framed spectacles and studded belts.

Neon is also a must-have in Indie culture. Everything must have some form of stand-out quality, and neon colours are usually the best way to achieve this. Bands such as The Ting Tings are renowned for this, as even their microphones and bound in neon strips.
