On Deafness
Why I am less fond of deaf culture.
Although I am deaf myself, I’m not really proud of it. It serves several obstacles and miserable periods in time for me. Limited access to jobs, public, social, and military are examples. I never wanted, nor asked for it. Though one might argue that it is God’s will, I can refute that one. It is these man-made vaccine that crippled my life from outside life.
But this is not about my life, as you shall read. I am not here to type about my life. I am here to criticize the deaf culture. I will list top 10 reasons why I am ashamed of deaf culture itself in some aspects, when compared to larger and wider societies.
10. Less intelligent. Most of us are unintelligent. I find it hard to talk to deaf friends about politics and other subjects sometimes. However, I do see that deaf people who were raised in hearing families are usually more entertained and talkable.
9. Socially inept. Some of them have little common sense or understanding of life when it comes to drama or social life. Usually rude or like to get their popularity scenes out on the front. I call these ADHD.
8. Chiefdom. Culturally similar to blacks and American Indians, they reside in one of minorities world. Hence, they form in some kind of gangs or groups that have common identity against majority.
7. Motivation. Too many of deaf individuals are lazy or unmotivated, let alone underachieved.
6. Arrogant. They’re full of pride people. “Deaf pride” is such a silly, foolish thing for me. It is similar to black pride that went against public, such as Black Power from 1970s.
5. Inability to understand their society stands in America. Many are unaware of their own social stands or social status. Although that is debatable in part because naivety and innocence might enjoy life better than highly educated ones.
4. Small world. Since deaf is a small world, it is unbalanced and unstable. The last three top list will underline the reason of unbalanced and unstable.
3. Homosexuality. It is far more likely for a deaf individual to become homosexual. As stated in number 5, they are unaware of social status in society. I know some deaf individuals who are homosexuals, or at least experimented. In contrast to hearing people, I know few or none.
2. Criminals-ridden, drugs-ridden. Drugs are much far more likely in deaf world. Because their world is small and insignificant, the community is easily infested with drugs and criminal gangs. Foreign deaf immigrants might account for these in a much higher percentage than deaf Americans.
1. Immorality. Some of them might lead immoral life much more. No moral understandings of biblical or social friendship undermine that. Perhaps religious teachings were absent from their early life for that reason.

I enjoyed reading your article, because I do not know much about the deaf community. I do believe poeple are sometimes afraid of what they do not know or understand. I do have to agree with you on the isolationism one can bring on themself when they are different. It is much better to get to know different cultures and ways of life than to ignore it. Good article. I love reading diverse topics

It seems like you are writing about people that share your situation in life in a way that would shame them. You describe deaf people in away that makes them look like totally stupid, uneducated, socially underdeveloped sickos. In this whole article I haven’t found a single word of accomplishment, encouragement, pride or support. If I were deaf, I would pity you for being unable to see opportunities, not challenges. I have a chronic medical condition to deal with that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I would NEVER talk down to or about people who suffer from this as well. What you need is a brighter outlook on life and the assurance that you surely have wonderful qualities (somewhere) that you can share and use to your advantage.

I understand Eldridge’s points. He simply pointed out the social factors that might interfere the deaf people. I don’t think that he is trying to expose them of their stupidity, but rather bring up the issues that deal with deaf community. He is probably trying to point out the problems rather than solutions.
I am quite sure that he understood the opportunities available to the deaf community, only that it is staggered, possibly. It is no easy task, especially because Eldridge risked his balls posting such a post.

Being Deaf myself I am offended and saddened by your opinion. I think maybe you might view Deaf culture differently if you actually experienced it yourself. From what I read in your post, you know nothing about Deaf culture. You also wrote in your profile that you are “well balanced”, which I have to disagree with. You made a blanket statement that Deaf people are unintelligent, socially retarded, lazy, arrogant and unstable. I think you should maybe look at yourself, because these kinds of statements have no credibility other than YOUR opinion. And frankly, your opinion has no validity. I really feel sorry for you. You must think these things about yourself, and I hope you can get the help you need for your low self-esteem.

I, myself, am also hearing impaired and like your article. I attempt to stay outside the circle, exceed myself to more exposures to the hearing World which has more to offer. But they chose to be inside their own circle and not expanding themselves. Not my choice, obviously. I am married and straight. Agree that there are more homosexual deaf people than there are straight which is why I am trying to find out why. For my selfish reason, I rather see them to be straight and try to expand more to themselves. Being in circle, I agree, do really limit themselves. I like your article.

I am deaf myself, and very involved in hearing world and only social with deaf that are “hearies”, intelligent with good grammar and not socially inept. I agree with your blog. Glad to know I’m not only one.
