I am deaf myself, and very involved in hearing world and only social with deaf that are “hearies”, intelligent with good grammar and not socially inept. I agree with your blog. Glad to know I’m not only one.

I, myself, am also hearing impaired and like your article. I attempt to stay outside the circle, exceed myself to more exposures to the hearing World which has more to offer. But they chose to be inside their own circle and not expanding themselves. Not my choice, obviously. I am married and straight. Agree that there are more homosexual deaf people than there are straight which is why I am trying to find out why. For my selfish reason, I rather see them to be straight and try to expand more to themselves. Being in circle, I agree, do really limit themselves. I like your article.

Being Deaf myself I am offended and saddened by your opinion. I think maybe you might view Deaf culture differently if you actually experienced it yourself. From what I read in your post, you know nothing about Deaf culture. You also wrote in your profile that you are “well balanced”, which I have to disagree with. You made a blanket statement that Deaf people are unintelligent, socially retarded, lazy, arrogant and unstable. I think you should maybe look at yourself, because these kinds of statements have no credibility other than YOUR opinion. And frankly, your opinion has no validity. I really feel sorry for you. You must think these things about yourself, and I hope you can get the help you need for your low self-esteem.

I understand Eldridge’s points. He simply pointed out the social factors that might interfere the deaf people. I don’t think that he is trying to expose them of their stupidity, but rather bring up the issues that deal with deaf community. He is probably trying to point out the problems rather than solutions.

I am quite sure that he understood the opportunities available to the deaf community, only that it is staggered, possibly. It is no easy task, especially because Eldridge risked his balls posting such a post.

It seems like you are writing about people that share your situation in life in a way that would shame them. You describe deaf people in away that makes them look like totally stupid, uneducated, socially underdeveloped sickos. In this whole article I haven’t found a single word of accomplishment, encouragement, pride or support. If I were deaf, I would pity you for being unable to see opportunities, not challenges. I have a chronic medical condition to deal with that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I would NEVER talk down to or about people who suffer from this as well. What you need is a brighter outlook on life and the assurance that you surely have wonderful qualities (somewhere) that you can share and use to your advantage.

I enjoyed reading your article, because I do not know much about the deaf community. I do believe poeple are sometimes afraid of what they do not know or understand. I do have to agree with you on the isolationism one can bring on themself when they are different. It is much better to get to know different cultures and ways of life than to ignore it. Good article. I love reading diverse topics
