Seven Questions about Central Americans and Africans.

  1. In terms of government structure, Central American civilizations didn’t have an absolute ruler, but rather a council of elders that would make the decisions of the civilization, and even if there was a chief it was really just a figurehead position because he would rely on the council for advice on almost every decision. These civilizations did not develop into kingdoms or empires and there was almost no change in government during the time they ruled themselves.
  2. The Aztecs and the Mayas had farming techniques that allowed them to farm in areas common to their environment. The Aztecs would build land-patches on the coast of rivers, and farm on those using fertilizer; and they learned to farm on slopes by creating a system of irrigation that used the environment to its benefit. The Incas on the other hand, learned how to farm on slopes by cutting “steps” into the mountain side and farming on each level.
  3. Religion affected the development of the Mayas and the Aztecs because there where many tribes which they captured and sacrificed in battle; and they would kill them for the sun god, and the tribes around them started despising this behavior causing them to loose all loyalty to these big civilizations.
  4. The Incas where different from the Aztecs and the Mayas, First because they where in South America and the other two where in central America; Second, because the climate was more diverse than the other two and their land was stretched out from desert to mountains; Third, their staple foods where almost all roots, while the others had corn/avocados/tomatoes etc. Also they differed in achievements because the Incas had different problems to overcome than the other two.
  5. Three Major similarities between the Aztecs, Incas and Mayas are:

    • a. They all worshiped a “sun god”.
    • b. Most of their food was based on agriculture.
    • c. They all found a way to adapt their farming to the land they where on.
  6. Major differences between Central/South American Civilizations and West/South-East African Civilizations.
    • a. African cities traded a lot and shared culture with many other cities.
    • b. C/S American civilizations where more self-centered and they didn’t share their culture that much except for in war.
    • c. African cities didn’t rely on farming too much.
    • d. C/S American civilizations depended on their crops to live.
  7. Isolation from the rest of the world helped African and American civilizations to thrive, because when they did come into contact with the Europeans all they did was exploit them until they hardly had anything left. In Africa’s case taking the resources for themselves, in America’s case killing all the inhabitants for control over their land/resources.
