The Downfall of Being a Hipster

by narwhalz in Subcultures, November 14, 2009

The hipster trend- thats right, its a trend. You actually aren’t “indie”.

Everyone has a label. Even if you think you managed to escape the labeling process during high school, there was still a label for whatever you were. Whether you were a loser, loner, or geek, somebody labeled you at some point, and it stuck. That’s just how high school worked, and although you may have become a new person in college, your label will just change.

Which brings us to indie kids. They all claim to be doing their own thing, but they all look the same. They all managed to acquire their label, but over time, someone realized that they weren’t so independent at all, they were just copying someone that was.

In the ’40s, the term hipster applied to anyone into that jazz music thing that was going on. Managing to die out after a bit, it wasn’t gone for long as it returned during the 90s and growing since then until now.

Calling someone a hipster is usually a negative term, since it blames someone that wants to be original of just following everyone else. Hipsters can be found in places like Brooklyn, parts of California, and I guarantee you in different areas of every state. The guy hipsters wear tight pants, tight shirts, trendy sunglasses, carry messenger bags, and are known for drinking Pabst blue ribbon, while the girls buy anything from urban outfitters and actually wear pretty much the same thing.

Why such negativity to hipsters?

Negative comments are aimed towards everyone, no matter how much good or evil they’ve set upon the world. The actual indie kids don’t like them because they aren’t real indie kids, and the rednecks/jocks/other don’t like them for multiple reasons: the guys dress like they’re gay, they pollute America with their liberal ideas, they bike everywhere, they only drink coffee, etc. etc.

The select few that are actually original will unfortunately be fit into society like an odd puzzle piece by someone who cares enough to make them conform.
